Six must-see sets at Carolina Rebellion
From headliners to the undercard, here's a handful of artists you'll not want to miss

Two days. Four stages. A whole lot of bands. From the main card to the secondary stages, fans of hard rock and heavy metal will have plenty of music to soak in during the 5th annual Carolina Rebellion music festival. Folks planning to attend undoubtedly have their favorites or list of artists they'll skip, but we're pointing out three artists each day who will likely have memorable sets, for one reason or another.
SATURDAY
Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts (2:40 p.m., Monster Energy Carolina Stage)
One day before the former Stone Temple Pilots singer's new album was released, his guitar player, Jeremy Brown, died. The band's tour is just getting under way with new guitarist Nick Maybury, so it will be interesting to see how the band is able to pull it all together on stage with a missing/replacement piece and a new vibe. No doubt there will be plenty of old STP songs played here, but it also looks like Weiland is keeping an eye the future, not his past, with his new endeavor.
Sammy Hagar and the Circle (7:40 p.m., Monster Energy Rebellion Stage)
For every David Lee Roth fan, there appears to be an equal number of Sammy Hagar fans. Well, here's your chance to catch The Red Rocker along with fellow Van Halen alum Michael Anthony in person. They, along with Jason Bonham and Vic Johnson, make up this new band that's playing a mix of Van Halen, Montrose, Chickenfoot, Hagar and Led Zeppelin tunes. If you're waiting for Hagar to get back together with Van Halen, this is the closest you'll get to that snowball in hell.
Korn (9:50 p.m., Monster Energy Rebellion Stage)
Three years ago, at Carolina Rebellion in Rockingham, North Carolina, Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch reunited with the band after seven years to play one song in the encore. In 2013, he returned full time, and this performance marks the first time the band has been back to the area since. For hardcore Korn fans, it means a lot — unless original drummer David Silveria returns, which is apparently just another snowball in hell since Silveria recently sued the band.
SUNDAY
In This Moment (3 p.m., Monster Energy Carolina Stage)
It wasn't too long ago that this metal outfit was performing straight-forward sets of their music on the side stages of many a metal music festival with little fanfare. In 2012, the band released a new album, Blood, and, along with it, a new presentation. Ever since, the band's concerts have been dotted with costume changes by singer Maria Brink and theatrical performances that are sometimes more fun than the music. While it started getting stale, a new album — 2014's Black Widow — has sparked new life into their stage show.
Breaking Benjamin (5:35 p.m., Monster Energy Rebellion Stage)
After a messy band breakup in 2011 and an illness for singer/guitarist Benjamin Burnley sidelined Breaking Benjamin for a few years, the group re-formed with Burnley and all new members last fall. A new album is set for release this summer, so this is a chance for fans to not only hear the group again but to get a solid preview of the new material. The band's latest single, "Failure," has the same hard-rock feel as previous efforts and shows not much has changed, sonically, since the new lineup got together.
Slipknot (9:35 p.m., Monster Energy Rebellion Stage)
Yet another band with a bit of drama going on, that has a lot to prove to fans. After the death of bassist Paul Gray in 2010 and the departure of drummer Joey Jordison in 2013, the Iowa metal outfit had some healing and growth to do. This led to the band's latest release, 2014's .5: The Gray Chapter. It's been six years since the band has performed in Charlotte, so fans here are more than ready. New masks, new songs, new energy — we expect a memorable performance to close out the weekend.
OTHER NOTES:
* The layout of this year's festival has changed slightly with the addition of a fourth stage and the "Pig Out Village" food area.
* Live, Bush and Marmozets have dropped off the originally announced lineup.
* Nonpoint, Hollywood Undead, Sons of Texas, Stars in Stereo and Lola Black have been added to the lineup since that initial announcement.
* A Friday night campground concert will feature Brown Sabbath, Failure Anthem and 21st Century Goliath.
