It's that cinematic wasteland between winter's Oscar contenders and summer's box office champions. Yes, it's the spring movie season, but it isn't all gloom and doom. As always, there are enough titles being released that a few gems are certain to be found amidst the rubble.
Approximately three dozen films are scheduled to open locally between now and mid-May. Here are descriptions of 10 of them — one per weekend release date — as well as a list of the other titles.
MARCH 11: After aliens destroy most of the world's major metropolises, it's up to a Marine sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his squad to save the California city in Battle: Los Angeles. Also: Mars Needs Moms; Red Riding Hood.
MARCH 18: In the seriocomedy Win Win, a lawyer (Paul Giamatti) who's struggling to make ends meet accepts a side job looking after a troubled teen (Alex Shaffer), a decision that affects his entire family. Also: The Lincoln Lawyer; Limitless; Paul.
MARCH 25: In Sucker Punch, the latest from director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen), five young women led by Babydoll (Emily Browning) use their minds to create a virtual reality in which they're able to combat the evil folks hoping them captive. Also: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.
APRIL 1: Source Code stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a soldier used in an experiment that places him inside another man's body long enough to catch a mad bomber. Also: Hop; Insidious; The Music Never Stopped; Super.

APRIL 22: Sara Gruen's massive bestseller Water for Elephants finally reaches the screen, with Robert Pattinson cast as the veterinary student who hooks up with a circus and falls for one of its performers (Reese Witherspoon), much to the dismay of the woman's jealous husband (Inglourious Basterds Oscar winner Christoph Waltz). Also: Apollo 18; Born to Be a Star; Haywire; Madea's Big Happy Family.
APRIL 29: Just when you thought it was safe to climb back into the driver's seat, along comes Fast Five, which finds the Fast & Furious team of Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) and Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) attempting to pull off one last job while a federal agent (Dwayne Johnson) breathes down their necks. Also: Hoodwinked Too! Hood VS. Evil; Prom.
MAY 6: The first of the summer's countless superhero sagas, Thor casts Chris Hemsworth as the Norse god living among us mere mortals here on Earth while his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) continues to lord over Asgard; newly anointed Oscar winner Natalie Portman also stars. Also: Jumping the Broom; Something Borrowed.
MAY 13: The action-packed Priest stars Paul Bettany as the title warrior (yes, warrior), who sets out to save his niece from the vampires who have taken over the planet. Also: Bridesmaids.
