The Charlotte duo Bless These Sounds Under the City has given Creative Loafing the first look at their new video for "The Sleeping 8," the pair's first single off their 2016 release, On the Brink of Life, and man is it some trippy shit.
The dreamy, melodic mood of the song is reminiscent of a Fleet Foxes tune, and fits well with the spaced-out atmosphere of the video, which features Albert Strawn and Derrick Hines of BTSUTC waking up in a field in space suits, then removing them to roam a luminescent, wooded landscape."'The Sleeping 8' is a metaphor for the infinity symbol," says Strawn. "The song takes place in the moment where the beginning and ending of time meet. As people are being swallowed by the end of the universe and time they simultaneously witness the beginning of it with golden spirals exploding in their eyes."
The video was shot in McDowell Park in Charlotte and areas around Lake Wylie in one long day, filming until 4:30 a.m. It was directed, photographed and edited by William S. Davis, Erik Murphy and Tracy L. Cummins, respectively, all of whom are members of the Charlotte-based digital marketing firm Small Creatures. BTSUTC has worked once before with Small Creatures, for the live performance video, "Too Much Everyone."
Small Creatures is currently working on another collaboration with Strawn and Hines, putting together an animated video for another song off the album called "An Iridescent Aura." Stay tuned to CL for updates on that video.
