Mac's Speed Shop opens a new restaurant

Ride your hog down to Arsley. Charlotte's favorite motorcycle bbq joint Mac's Speed Shop just opened another restaurant off Sandy Porter Road. Mac's now exists in three locations (the other locations are on South Boulevard and in the Lake Norman area).

Special three-course meal offered at Fiamma

Fiamma Restaurant in Dilworth is offering a three-course meal for $25 every Monday to Wednesday. You may pick one antipasto plate, a "secondo," and "I Dolci." Among the options are: vegetable croquettes, fresh calamari sauteed with avocado, veal, ravioli, rigatoni bolognese, panna cotta, and more.

Fiamma did a similar menu for Charlotte Restaurant Week -- three courses for $30. Now you are saving $5 and getting the same amount of food. Sweet. Check out these pics from Fiamma.

* Now open is the second 1900 Mexican Grill & Tequila Bar. This one is in Elizabeth on Elizabeth Avenue -- the street the city has made to look closed with the construction of the streetcar tracks and the widening of the sidewalks, but all the restaurants along that street are open. Construction is scheduled to conclude in June.

* Morton’s The Steakhouse, 227 West Trade St., is offering big-screen viewing of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Series on 9-foot drop-down screens with HD projection and Surround Sound on 11 speakers through Monday, April 6. Bar bites include Mini Cheeseburger Trio; Four Petite Filet Mignon Sandwiches; Chicken Goujonettes; Crab, Spinach & Artichoke Dip; Three Mini Crab Cakes; Iceberg Wedge Bites; and Blue Cheese French Fries. All of these are $5 each. Also on hand are Oysters on the Half Shell ($1.50) and Colossal Shrimp ($2.75). Reservations: 704-333-2602.

* Global Restaurant and The Country Vintner are hosting a Chilean wine tasting on Wednesday, March 25, from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. ($15 plus tax and gratuity). Meet the owners of Cloud 9 Confections

Nestled inside the Uptown Charlotte Plaza, Cloud 9 Confections is a welcoming, minority-owned bakery with desserts that will have you visiting several times a day. Cloud 9 Confections specializes in cakes and custom orders made from scratch. Not to mention the owners, Roland and Erica Baez-Horton, being a joy to be around. You will walk out with not only great desserts, but great friends as well.

Creative Loafing: Tell us some things about yourself?

Erica Baez-Horton: I love cake, can’t you tell! I was originally born in Puerto Rico, and then moved here to Morgantown, N.C., when I was 7 years old. So I have been in North Carolina most of my lifetime. I went to UNC-Charlotte, and then I fell in love and moved to Virginia with my honey.

Roland Horton: We have two kids. I love sports; I coach an AAU basketball team. Basketball is my first love. I am originally from Morgantown, N.C. And I have an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice. Then I met my lovely wife in 1992.

I saw on the web site that you all do eggless and vegan cakes; tell me more about that?

Erica: That came pretty much from one of my supervisors from Wachovia; she told me that I should really explore the vegan and the eggless world — she’s from the Indian community. So I decided to do the Festival of India with her, and I couldn’t believe the response I got from them. It was very welcoming, and it was almost like, “wow, finally we have a professional cake decorator who understands our religious beliefs in addition to our dietary needs.” We have extended our products to gluten-free, vegan and eggless. We are very detailed-oriented whenever we take orders to ensure we do the proper preparation for them.

Roland: We also cater to the diabetic community as well, seeing as how I’m diabetic.

Do you have a personal favorite cake?

Roland: My favorite cake, we have not baked here, but my grandmother used to make a caramel cake that was out of this world. That would be my personal favorite.

Erica: For me, being from the Caribbean we love anything with rum in it. I love Dominican cake, Pineapple Rum cake and a fresh pound cake.

Huh? I am perplexed.

How'd they get the chocolate in the real egg shell? Are you perplexed too?

Rita's giving out free Italian Ice on Friday

In a sweet respite from bad economic news, Rita's Italian Ice is giving away one free, 10-ounce cup of Italian ice per person on Friday, March 20 from noon until 10 p.m. In the 17th year of celebrating this First Day of Spring promotion, they plan on doling out one million ices at their 500 locations in 17 states.
