Our film editor Matt Brunson has a great job he watches movies and writes about them for a living. While I'm slaving away in front of my desk doing that regular 9 to 5, he's watching some great (and some not-so-great) films. He's a true film geek, and if you know of someone who is too, maybe you should get them something from Matt's list of gift ideas below. And may the force be with you. (Or not?)
Tauntaun Sleeping Bag Perfect for the Star Wars fan on your list, this sleeping bag is shaped like the creature that terrorized Luke Skywalker at the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back. And yes, the interior of the item is made to look like the beasts own innards, as we saw when Han Solo cut open the Tauntaun and stuffed Luke inside. ($99.)
Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XVI The latest four-film collection not only includes a Tom Servo figurine (to match the Crow figurine issued earlier this year) but, for the sake of the season, includes among its celluloid turkeys the legendary 1959 Mexican import Santa Claus, in which the jolly fat man battles Satan! ($64.99.)
Movie Posters Give the gift of film art this holiday season. Movieposter.com offers all manner of movie graphics, including posters for all the latest releases. (Their current top five: The Twilight Saga: New Moon; Brothers; Disneys A Christmas Carol; Armored; 2012.) (Prices vary)
New Moon Action Figures Now you can make the hunky boys of the Twilight saga do your bidding! Uh, all seven inches of them (no dirty jokes, please). (Prices vary; available at various Web sites)
Harry Potter Years 1-6 Giftset The latest Potter adventure, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, has just been released on DVD, but if you know someone who doesnt own any of the films in the series, how about picking up this cost-conscious collection that includes all six magical movies? ($69.98)
Charlotte is full of music lovers, as evidenced by the diverse mix of music venues all over town. And no one is a bigger music lover than CL Music Editor Jeff Hahne. (By the way, this week's cover story is a compilation of photos he's taken at concerts this past year. There are a LOT.) In fact, a few weeks ago, he received a Grateful Dead-Opoly game (see below) in a press kit, and he was practically bouncing in excitement. OK, maybe not bouncing, but I think he was pretty excited. Here are his five picks for gift ideas for the music lover in your life.
Local CDs. Transmission Fields, Harvard, GogoPilot and plenty of others have released albums in the last few weeks, and this year. Support the local scene while giving someone something great to listen to.
Pint glasses and bobble heads for a variety of bands, such as Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix, are available at Manifest Discs in Charlotte.
Grateful Dead-Opoly Everyone else has their version of Monopoly so, why not a version for The Dead where you can buy and sell different albums and music venues. It's officially licensed by the band, too.
iTunes gift card. Stop trying to push off your crappy music onto your friends ... or maybe they want to secretly buy something by Miley Cyrus or the Backstreet Boys. You don't want to be seen buying their album, so give them this instead.
Music lessons. Maybe someone who know wants to learn how to play music, or maybe they think they can play, but really suck. Either way, there are lots of locals that give lessons and can teach you what a G string really is ... on a guitar.
Today's gift guide is for those cultural folks, the lover of the arts, put together by our listings editor and arts writer Anita Overcash.
Tom Clarks gnome creations come in a variety of styles and sizes. His newest, annual Christmas statue, Ike, honors former President David Eisenhower and features a gnome teaching a snowman to play golf. How cute! To see it, and others, go here.
Trans-Siberian Orchestras newest album, Night Castle, is a double-disc with 26 tracks. Its only $9.99 on www.amazon.com.
Jennifer Meccas whimsical pottery can be found at Wooden Stone in Davidson.
Art, jewelry, pottery (they have works by potter Jennifer Mecca too), and other pieces of art, make up Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique. My number one recommendation would be a dreamy painting (large or small) by local artist Duy Huynh.
You can find an assortment of items, including mugs, coasters, belt buckles, and jewelry, that pay homage to Frida Kahlo at Pura Vida Worldly Art. In addition, the store offers an assortment of art and home décor of all types.
Today's gift guide is for the resident foodie in your life. Like Priscilla Tsai, our online producer and food blogger for EatMyCharlotte.com, who can eat anything and everything and still look fab. Here are her top five choices for gifts this year.
Vosges Red Fire Toffee: I LOVE THIS STUFF! This caramel toffee is like crack. Sweet, salty, and slightly spicy toffee spiked with ancho and chipotle chillis and cinnamon, drenched in dark chocolate and spicy chopped pecans. ($20)
Onion Goggles: Because crying in the kitchen isn't cute ... especially when you are cooking in front of guests. ($22)
Vietnamese Style Coffee Filter: Make your own Vietnamese coffee with this simple filter. Let the coffee drip over a few tablespoons of condensed milk, pour it all over ice, and you've got yourself a cheaper and better-than-Starbucks iced latte. ($3.25)
Pizza Stone: Don't have a brick oven in your house? Neither do I. But a heavy-duty pizza stone will cook your homemade (and frozen) pizzas to perfection with a nicely browned crust no more soggy pale crusts! ($42)
MU Kitchen MUbamboo Dish Towels: These towels have got it going on. They are lint free and streak free, super absorbent (7x its weight in liquid), and fast drying (the 10x faster drying time cuts down on the growth of bacteria.) They come in candy colors too to brighten up the kitchen. ($28.05)
So, I'm a bit freaked out. Christmas is only 14 days away, and I have YET to begin my holiday shopping. I'm sure you're not in the same boat as I am, you non-procrastinator, you.
Well, just in case you do need some help, I'm compiling a gift guide to make things a little easier on ya. Each day from now until Dec. 23 (because honestly, I'm just not going to be worrying about your gift-shopping on Christmas eve when I'm sure I'll be wrapping my own up then), check back to Klepto to see gift recommendations for that special someone in your life, whether they're music geeks, film fan boys or arts lovers. I'm sure you'll find something worthy to be wrapped.
Today, our resident comic book geek, CL Editor Carlton Hargro, takes a small break from blogging over at Comic Proportions to list for you, dear reader, gift ideas for the comic book geek in your life. You can buy most of these items at your local comic book shop; to find a store near you, visit: www.comicshoplocator.com. Anyway, heres the list:
The Starman Omnibus Vol. 4 hardcover: When writer James Robinson penned the monthly adventures of Starman, I was a regular reader. And this giant-sized collection of the comic done in a deluxe format is probably the best-looking way to take a walk down memory lane.
Spawn: Endgame, Vol. 2 trade paperback: This collection reprints Todd McFarlanes relaunch of the Spawn franchise, with pencilled art by Whilce Portacio and inks by McFarlane himself. I skipped the monthly issues when they came out, but I think this story will be a great read as one fat, juicy tale.
Newwave! The Underground Mini Comix of the 1980s: I missed out on many of these comics when they were originally published, but this collection featuring work by R. Crumb and Art Spiegelman, among others gives me a chance to see some comic greats early in their careers.
The Original Johnson Vol. 1: Im not usually a fan of comic book biographies, but Ive always been fascinated by the life of Jack Johnson, so I gotta read this.
The Goon Gelaskin: I love The Goon and as a result, Im ecstatic that the zombie-fighting character created by Eric Powell can now adorn my iPhone in the form of a handy-dandy gelaskin cover.
You can't really go wrong in gift-giving with pottery, but finding just the right type to satisfy the receiver may be an issue. On Dec. 4, Winthrop University will have its 20th Annual Holiday Pottery Sale, which showcases an array of hand-crafted decorative vessels and ceramic sculptures by Winthrop students and faculty, including featured potter Jennifer Mecca. You're bound to find something here. 12 p.m.-6 p.m. Held in Winthrop University's Rutledge Building G-10, 701 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC. 803-323-2323. www.winthrop.edu.
Here's a great gift idea: handmade jewelry. And what better place to find that than at a pop-up shop dedicated exclusively to the sparklies.
