NYFashionWeek Highlight 5: Diesel Black Gold

Posted By on Thu, Feb 19, 2009 at 9:56 PM

NewsDay writer Anne Bratskeir calls the fall line of Diesel "hobo chic."

I have to agree.

There's not much in the collection -- lingerie-type tops layered beneath frumpy coats on the women, rumpled suits on the men -- that you'd see on bankers Jill and Joe here in the Queen City, but that's probably why I like it.

NYFashionWeek Highlight 4: Eclectic Tracy Reese

Posted By on Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 2:53 PM

Designer Tracy Reese churns out feminine yet edgy clothing, and her fall line lives up to that reputation. She's got everything from frilly short skirts to fur-lined jackets; bright patterns, bold neckwear (even this fur scarf that hangs off to the side) and silky, romantic tops. One outfit I definitely didn't like was this gold lacquer pant suit. Yup, gold jacket and gold pants.

From WWD.com:

Of all the ideas outlined in Tracy Reese’s show notes — romance, understated glamour and post- Impressionistic portraiture among them — eclectic was the most accurate description. Indeed, Reese’s collection was less about a unified theme than a lot of pretty pieces.

'Charlotte's stimulus plan is yellow and blue'

Posted By on Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 11:03 AM

By Rhiannon Bowman

This morning, despite the icky weather, IKEA opened — 15 minutes early — after Mayor Pat McCrory and some of the company's top officials sawed a log, a Swedish tradition meant to welcome new guests. The crowd entered the store, screaming, to applause; the lobby was packed with IKEA staffers, some dressed in Swedish garb, cheering, taking pictures and offering high fives to the store's new customers.

Hundreds of Queen City residents waited in line, some for 12 hours or more, hoping they would be one of the first 100 through the door — those folks received a free IKEA chair. The first 2,500 through the door received a gift card, values ranged from 50 cents to $250. (Mine was $50, which is going to Twitter user @IKEA_Devotee. Even though she's been pumping up Charlotte citizens about today's opening for months, she wasn't able to be there this morning.)

Most of the people in line said they were there for the experience, not necessarily to buy anything in particular. Though, several mentioned the store's famous Swedish meatballs, available in the second floor cafe, one of the store's two cafes, as a good-enough reason to stand in line in the freezing rain. (They are good.)

More pictures can be seen after the jump.

NYFashionWeek Highlight 3: Justin Timberlake/William Rast

Posted By on Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 10:11 AM

Sexy R&B singer Justin Timberlake is one of four folks behind the label William Rast, which showcased at NY Fashion Week Monday.

From the Telegraph:

The name of the brand comes from Timberlake and Ayala’s grandfathers and in less than two years it has come to represent a realistic, tough-chic style of dressing which is energetic, powerful and as far removed from girlie fashion as it is possible to get.

NYFashionWeek Highlight 2: Do the DKNY

Posted By on Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 9:34 AM

I love D.C. And I love when designers stray from their signature looks to mix it up a bit, as Donna Karan did for her DKNY line. She showcased her fall line Sunday.

From the Telegraph:

The streets of her beloved New York have always been an inspiration for Donna Karan’s DKNY collection. But, for next autumn/winter, one senses a little touch of Washington DC jostling for prominence.

Neat, tailored, ladylike; jewel-colours; slim skirts and three-quarter sleeves; even a pair of green patent shoes. Could the “Mo” Obama effect be an influence.

This collection was far more structured and workwoman-like than the usual DKNY offering.

NYFashionWeek Highlight 1: Barbie turns 50

Posted By on Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 3:11 PM

NY Fashion Week is in full swing, but it's kind of hard for us to keep up with all that fashion excitement knowing that IKEA is opening up tomorrow. Nonetheless, a job must be done.

Saturday, Mattel invited more than 1,000 guests to view a fashion show featuring 50 designer looks inspired by Barbie. Yes, it's the Barbie Runway Show. From WSJ.com:

The show was a celebration of “all things girl,” said Richard Dickson, general manager and senior vice president worldwide for Mattel, noting that it was part of an ongoing marketing campaign to strengthen Barbie’s relevance, especially against new dolls like the Bratz.

Are you ready for some IKEA?

Posted By on Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 11:23 AM

Unless you're living under a rock, by now you've heard that Swedish home furnishings retailer IKEA is opening up in Charlotte tomorrow morning.

It's going to be crazy. The Observer is reporting that "Charlotte transportation officials are expecting Race Day-like traffic."

WCOC-TV is reporting that people are already in line, waiting for Wednesday's grand opening.

I'm excited.

I had my first IKEA experience last year at the one in Atlanta. My friend and I walked around for over an hour, picking up random colorful things, sitting on couches, chairs, beds, opening up cabinets and drawers, sitting at tables, turning faucets ... We took complete advantage of their "strict please-touch policy."
