William Wilson is a businessman's best friend. His suit is finely pressed, his tie is in place and he knows how to make corporate America look good. As a custom clothier, he specializes in men’s clothing, professional clothing, custom and ready-made. He also does image consulting and recently developed a program called POINTS, which stands for Power of Image in Today’s Society, in which he goes into high schools and colleges to talk to kids about image and the effect of image to the rest of their lives.

How did you get into the business of custom clothing?

Well I’ve always been interested in fashion, looking well and stuff like that. I used to own a company that did big high-end custom homes, so I kind of but together a good friend base of athletes, and they were always telling me to help them with their clothes, put this together, put that together. I was so busy doing that, I decided I needed to get paid for this. Dice kind of fell the right way and I started my own company, William Wilson Clothing, which has officially been running for a year and a half, but I've been doing this about three years now.

Who are some of your clients?

Most of my clients like to stay discrete. Guys at that level, they don’t necessarily like to let people know what they’re doing. The two guys I can tell you about, Mike Barber, who played in the NFL, just started his new company, Pro Athletes Counsel. I did four suits for him. He played for the Colts and the Sea Hawks.

Lenny McAllister, he’s a political analyst — he’s on Fox News Rising, he’s on CNN, various things like that. I did a tuxedo for him for the inaugural ball for President Obama’s inauguration.

An interview with fashion consultant Michele Roberts

This week in our series of interviews with local stylists in Charlotte, check out a Q&A with Michele Roberts, fashion consultant and owner of Tuunique Fashions & Designs.

micheleroberts.jpg

Creative Loafing: So tell us a little bit about your background.

Michele Roberts: Well, three years ago I was working part time in retail, at S&K Men's. I liked working there because I got to dress men, measure them and put together outfits they felt comfortable in. People started giving me compliments about my styling, telling me I should do this for a living. They would tell me, if you see something out shopping for me, pick it up for me.

I went to school for communications but I've always been interested in fashion. This past summer, I started [Tuunique Fashions]. I do fashion consulting, personal shopping, give fashion tips for professional people and for people trying to do up their look for events. Some need assessment of what's in their closet. I consult for women and men; after all, men are always looking for a woman's opinion anyway. My clients range from the young professionals to those going back to their 50th year reunions.

If a person contacts you for fashion consultation, what exactly do you do?

First, I get to know the client: what they do, what they like and dislike about their wardrobe. I determine their needs, what they're looking to do. A lot of times I bring photos, visual props, to help a person develop their style. After going through their closet, I itemize a list of things they should add. Either I can shop for them, or we can go together.

An interview with Stylist/Buyer Christy Ward

Posted By on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 1:47 PM

This week in our series of interviews with local stylists in Charlotte, check out a Q&A with Christy Ward, co-owner of Black & Blue and a jewelry maker.

christyward.jpg

Creative Loafing: So tell us a little about yourself.

Christy Ward: Well, I have a fashion merchandising retail degree from the University of Alabama. While I was there I actually had to do an internship with Women’s Wear Daily. I had the opportunity to do that, and I was the assistant stylist. I pretty much kept track of everything that came in for photo shoots as far as speaking with vendors, designers, getting stuff, you know, merchandise. Worked with models and went to different boutiques there and picked out what the photographers wanted or what they were doing the stories on.

Now I work here [Black & Blue].

I also make jewelry. I like to go for unique and eclectic things like pendants, or make different things. Amethyst, Black Onyx, and um, coral beads. Things like that. It’s like my outlet for being creative so I can be myself.

So currently you're a buyer for Black & Blue?

Yeah, and then you know, we style. We had a fashion show, and we styled that. And a lot of customers, they want to know what is in style now and we kind of have to style them and help them out as well.

What do you think is hot for spring?

Hot, for spring? Definitely bold colors, a lot of color. Floral, anything floral. Chunky bracelets are definitely a big hit for spring. The strappy sandals. Ankle jeans, skinny ankle jeans. Um, a nice blouse is always in style. Anything that’s kind of edgy, but still feminine at the same time, I think is always in style.

Where do you get your own clothes from?

Of course, Black & Blue. The Pink Hanger is another boutique I like to shop at. I know it seems cliché, but Express sometimes has good stuff.

Black & Blue is located at 720 Governor Morrison St., Suite E-180. You can call the shop at 704-366-9339.

An interview with Stylist Jennifer Misenheimer

Posted By on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 8:00 AM

This week we're starting a new series of interviews with local stylists in Charlotte. Check out this Q&A with Jennifer Misenheimer, a woman who does everything from hair to making outfits.

jennifermisenheimer.jpg

Creative Loafing: Tell us a little bit about your background.

Jennifer Misenheimer: I do a little bit of everything and anything: clothes, hair, put together looks.

I work at T. Reid & Co. as a hair stylist, which I've been doing about two years now. I've taught art and worked in retail in the past, but now I feel like I have a job that allows me to express myself creatively and interact with people.

I also make a lot of costumes and clubwear for go-go dancers and bartenders for club and themed events. When I was younger, I modeled, and that definitely plays into me styling now. When you stand in front of a camera, you don't always know how you look, so I can tell a person how to do stuff over the top and get into more high fashions.

OK, so you make clothes?

Yeah, I learned to sew as a little girl. A lot of times I'll see a piece on the rack and think about how it would look better with a zipper or something like that, so I'll buy it and modify it.

Last year The Forum had me make snow bunny costumes for their bartenders for the Bartenders' Ball. Their theme was Scandinavian Winters. Red Bull Energy Drinks saw them and asked me to make a similar costume for one of their bartenders who was doing another event, and I was able to make it over night.

So what do you think is hot right now in fashion?

I've been seeing a lot of flat boots. Some of the newer styles are pushing limits going higher above the knee, which looks good with leggings.

Also, a lot of the clothes I've been buying lately are gray. It's very wearable — you can pair it with bright colors or something neutral.

My favorite thing about clothing right now is that anything goes. A lot of styles are coming back from different decades but you can incorporate them all together.

Where do you go shopping for your own stuff?

I definitely like going to the little boutiques. Boris & Natasha definitely. Some higher-end department stores. For my trendy, funkier stuff, I go to Eastland Mall. That's definitely one of Charlotte's best kept secrets. I can go in there and find a cute little dress for $10.99. And American Apparel is good to find your basics in any solid color.

To contact Jennifer for styling tips or to inquire about putting together an outfit for you, e-mail her at jenn42383@aol.com or check out her MySpace page.
