Thursday nights at Latorre's Disco usually cater to the college crowd, but this Thursday, Nov. 17 the club will offer something more palatable to a 21+ crowd. Colombian singer-songwriter Franco Londoño will serenade the crowd with a host of boleros, a form of slow-tempo Latin music that exists in both Spanish and Cuban forms. Londoño, sponsored by Kubota Music Production, will perform the boleros accompanied by live music and will offer interesting facts about world famous bolero composers, interpreters and songs.
Londoño recently released a compilation of his best original songs, marking the beginning of a style the artist calls “Pop-Opera-Latino...the musical path that would brighten my soul.”
The evening kicks off at 8 p.m. You can find more information at www.latorresdisco.com or http://francolondono.com/site/tickets/
11-11-11 may only happen once in our lifetimes, but this is the ninth year in a row that the Young Affiliates of the Mint (the YAMs) are giving us a chance to attend the bewitching Black & White Gala. The art-centric affair brings together Charlotte’s young professionals for a night of dancing, eating, drinking and socializing — all in support of the Mint Museum.
The YAMs make an effort every year to offer significant philanthropic contributions for the Mint. This Friday from 7 p.m.-11 p.m., the ambiance at Mint Museum Uptown will be transformed into one which the YAMs describe as “a fashionable fete inspired by Truman Capote’s celebrated masquerade ball of 1966.” The night promises to kick off Charlotte’s gift-giving season in style. Attendees will enjoy gallery tours, drinks and heavy hors d'oeuvres, live entertainment, and a silent auction.
Proceeds go to supporting Project FundaMINTal, which strives to raise $20,000 for the Mint's Annual Fund. The Annual fund meets the critical needs of the museum, including dynamic educational programs, essential community outreach, top-tier personnel, renowned exhibitions, and innovative research and scholarships. Fellow YAMs can purchase their tickets at a lower price, so if you've been itching for a chance to mingle with young professionals and art enthusiasts, this is your chance.
Purchase tickets and find more information at www.blackandwhitegala.com.
Veterans Day is a day traditionally set aside for reflection, gratitude, and dance-filled debauchery. Or at least that's what the folks over at Marigny Dance Club seem to think. This Friday, in honor of the federal holiday and of the club's monthly Friday-night party, Marigny will throw the Stars & Stripes shindig the likes of which Charlotte hasn't seen.
Like the night's catchphrase says "life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we're here, we should dance.” The bash will pay tribute to those who have proudly served the country, whether that means the armed forces or the police and fire departments. Party-goers are encouraged to come decked-out and celebrate with festive attire: camouflage is a surefire way to play off the patriotic look ."
DJ Michael Tank from the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area will make his Queen City debut.
18 to twirl, 21 to drink, $10 for everyone. You can find more information and RSVP to the event on its Facebook page.
Excluding the agog affections of league-joining aficionados, the bowling alley never quite appears to be anyone's first choice for a night out. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, a visit to the bowling alley is forever an afterthought, toppled in favor by dinner, drinks and dancing, and in constant competition with the pool hall. Conversely, bowling night can also suggest a conjuring of all things kitschy, from the cheap booze to the tawdry shoes. But if you're jonesin' for something different to fill your nocturnal hours with, bowling just may be it. Especially if you want to bowl in style.
Mr. Goodwill Hunting, aka Rashon Carraway, is hosting the “Bowling in Bowties” event at the Epicenter's Strike City, on Friday, Nov. 11. Participants can look forward to the venue's usual amenities, as well as a photo challenge to reward the night's best-looking bowtie'd bowler. An exclusive bowtie may be auctioned off as well. The event coincides with Strike City's “Birthday Club” promotion, where November birthday babies and their friends can receive special drink features, and more. More information about "Birthday club" can be found at http://strikecitycharlotte.com/special-event/?event_id=6749
