Charlotte City Councilman James "Smuggie" Mitchell surprised reporters and fellow council members Monday evening with a hilarious wisecrack that had the Government Center rocking with laughter.
It happened during a council debate over Mayor McCrory's proposal to make audio recordings of most of the council's closed meetings. After most council members praised the proposal and the public's right to know what its representatives are doing, Mitchell acting all serious and everything quipped that ... you'll love this ... the public should trust their elected representatives to do the right thing. Is that hysterical, or what?
Oh man ... wait a minute ... I'm laughing so hard I'm crying. "Trust their elected representatives to do the right thing." Where does Mitchell come up with this stuff?
OK, enough kidding around. Seriously, Mr. Smuggie, what world are you living in? In case you've been asleep or are simply clueless, this is the 21st Century and we, the public, don't trust our elected representatives any farther than we can throw you. And if you actually need to ask why, maybe you should get into a less reality-based line of work.
