If any reader of Creative Loafing is wondering why a movie as potentially huge as Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian isn't being reviewed on our pages or on this Web site, the reason is simple: 20th Century Fox is continuing its dunderheaded policy of not holding advance screenings in Charlotte.
While other studios have continued to hold press screenings throughout 2009 and the other one that didn't, Universal, has started up again in time for summer Fox still refuses to show any of its product ahead of time in our market. I've caught up with some of their movies once they opened (e.g. Taken, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), but I will not be extending that courtesy toward this early-summer entry. After all, I wasn't a fan of the wildly successful original, and, based on the migraine-inducing trailers for this sequel, the movie looks wretched beyond compare.
For the record, unless Fox gets its act together, here are the other summer flicks that will not be covered in CL: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs; I Love You, Beth Cooper; and Aliens in the Attic.
