News Two local eco firms get stimulus funds

Moments after the City Council wrapped up the great Goat Debate of '09 last week, they decided to accept $1,772,006.35 in stimulus funding for two storm water projects before moving on to other business. And, here's how they plan to spend the money:
Under a $1.44 million contract, Shamrock will create a nearly 28-acre wildlife habitat in the McAlpine Creek watershed in an area bounded by Albemarle Road, Independence Boulevard, Idlewild Road and Farm Pond Lane. The work includes restoration of streams and 6.1 acres of wetlands along Muddy Creek and Eastland Branch, tributaries to Campbell Creek. That includes stabilizing the creek’s banks to prevent erosion and retain water from heavy rains to prevent flooding.Meanwhile, Pineville-based 8 Star Construction Co. is lined up for a $331,510 water-reuse project at Revolution Park off Barringer Drive. The company will build a 2-acre lake to capture and filter stormwater that can be used for irrigation.
Both deals still require approval from the state, but work should start this month. The city is required to repay 50% of the funding — interest-free — within 20 years. And both contracts came in under the original budget.
