UNC Booster Club immune to budget cuts?!

Posted By on Mon, Jul 20, 2009 at 9:45 PM

With Raleigh legislators making severe budget cuts, teachers being laid off, and everyone being expected to tighten their belts — especially agencies that serve the poor, naturally, but that’s another story — one special group is still being “taken care of.” That would be the UNC Booster Club, which is set to receive its annual $10 million taxpayer subsidy. You see, the $10 million covers the cost of allowing out-of-state athletes to pay lower, in-state tuition rates. Nice, huh?

Some members of the House are raising Cain about it, but Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand (who until recently was a close ally of former Gov. Mike “Take My Wife ... Please” Easley) is a big UNC Booster Club booster. As the BlueNC website succinctly puts it, “We should be raving mad about this bullshit.” They also explain that House Speaker Joe Hackney is probably the only one who can stop this travesty, so why not let Tony and ol' Joe know how you feel about it? For Rand, call 919-733-9892 or email Tony.Rand@ncleg.net. For Hackney, call 919-733-3451 or email at Joe.Hackney@ncleg.net. (Illustration by M. Grooms)
