A really big show is coming to Charlotte

Posted By on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 10:30 AM

TLC brought us "Little People, Big World," and "Jon and Kate Plus 8."

Now, The Learning Channel (stop laughing, that's really what TLC stands for) is bringing us a show about a morbidly obese family from right here in Charlotte.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the network ordered six episodes of the show, which is tentatively titled "One Big Happy Family."

And what are we supposed to learn from this show? Just judging from the comments underneath the story on the Observers web site, people plan to do more laughing than learning.

The unnamed family to be chronicled on the show consists of a 40-year-old man weighing 340 pounds; his 35-year-old wife, who is close to 400 pounds; and their 330- and 340-pound teenage kids.

The documentary will tell each of their stories in first-person, with a special attention on the children, a boy and a girl.

While these people are unnamed right now, it's easy to see that once their faces show up on T.V. they're not going to get a lot of support from people in the community.

Take this comment from a reader:

can't 'weight' for the episode where they all cram into coach on a cross country flight. You know it's gonna happen.

'Little People, Big World' is about little people living in a big world. This is about big people living in a little world -- fat people living in a skinny world," Duffy said.

Little people have no choice in their appearance.

99.9 % of the time obesity is a life style choice, super sized fast food is an option not an obligation.... not trying to be mean but really

So, will you watch? Will you learn something?

I guess the bigger question is, when will all of these reality shows just go away?
