I was on the verge of writing about how refreshing it is that Obamas appointment of Amanda Simpson, a transgender female, to the post of senior technical adviser in the Commerce Department hasnt triggered the usual anti-gay spewing from the right. And then the fundamentalists of the religious right had their say. The anti-gay group Americans for Truth (if only) accused Obama of pandering to the gay lobby." A spokeswoman for Focus on the Family declared that the appointment was Obamas payback to his far-left base. And Matt Barber, an associate dean at the late Jerry Falwells Liberty University, an institution never to be outshone in an anti-gay competition, said the appointment boggles the mind. Matt, thats only if the mind in question is small and bigoted.
For the record, Simpson is readily recognized as an expert in the field of industry security, having worked in it for over 30 years, including her recent tenure as Deputy Director in Advanced Technology Development at Raytheon Missile Systems. But, hey, those are facts, never a high priority for bigots of any kind. The religious rights insistence that Simpson should have been passed over for the job simply because of her sexual identity is stupid prejudice, plain and simple, and as such, has no place or at least shouldnt have a place in a civilized discussion.
