Just came from a "big-top-raising" ceremony announcing the arrival of Cavalia in Charlotte. Just in case you're not familiar with Cavalia, it's a lavish, massive and somewhat surreal show that's all about man's relationship with horses. It features tons of acrobats, dancers and actors (40 or so) and tons of horses (about 60). It's kind of hard to explain, so here's a video of Cavalia in action:
The show is so big, its producers have to create a performance space just for the event hence today's ceremony. Here's a look at the tent going up (near Bank of America Stadium):
Of course, since Cavalia is utilizing this giant big-top space and horses, I was worried about two things: animal rights and bathrooms. The show's tour manager Duncan Fisher assured me that, "[The performers] don't use spurs and don't do circus tricks. We've been on the road for 7 years and never had a complaint from animal rights groups."
Oh and Cavalia doesn't employ "chemical toilets." They make use of tricked-out trailers that have running water and normal, flushing toilets. (Cool.)
Cavalia opens here on May 4 and runs until May 14. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, a detailed show schedule and reservations call 1-866-999-8111 or visit www.cavalia.net or follow on www.twitter.com/cavalia and www.facebook.com/cavalia.
