Charlotte wins Jersey matchup

Handsprings and somersaults are the order of the day at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, where they’ve tallied receipts for Jersey Boys after a record-breaking engagement that wrapped up on April 18. For the third straight week, the show set a new Belk Theater box office record at $1,265,665, topping the previous record of $1,240,430 for the middle week of the run, itself a 6.5 percent increase over the new record of $1,164,813 for the opening week ending on April 4.

Those April 18 numbers would have placed third among all Broadway shows in the official box office tallies for last week – behind only Wicked and The Lion King, while outgrossing such smash hits as The Addams Family, Billy Elliott, and, ahem, Jersey Boys. In fact, the Charlotte edition outgrossed the Broadway production during all three weeks of its stay.

Bad luck had something to do with the box office drubbing absorbed by the Broadway production of Jersey Boys during the second week of the Charlotte engagement at Belk Theater. Up in New York at the August Wilson Theatre, an electrical fire forced producers to cancel both the April 6 performance and the April 7 matinee.

Otherwise, the Charlotte production simply whupped those Yankees straight up. The touring show we saw down here was obviously too good to be true and too popular to be second-best.
