Boomer with Attitude / News BP already scamming coastal residents

Just when you thought big oil companies couldn’t get any worse, British Petroleum ups the ante. BP, apparently not content with losing an oil rig and pumping oil directly into the Gulf for God knows how long, has now been caught trying to scam Alabama citizens into giving up their right to sue over the spill.
BP has acknowledged its responsibility for the massive, coastline-endangering spill, and has said it would bear all the “reasonable costs” of cleaning up their mess; however, according to political website TalkingPointsMemo, Alabama’s Attorney General, Troy King, a Republican, accuses BP of offering $5000 to residents of coastal Alabama in exchange for signing over their right to sue BP over damages from the massive spill.
King told BP to stop the scam, after which a BP spokesperson said the waiver clause had been removed from the contract with coastal residents, and waivers will not be enforced on those contracts signed before King caught on to the oil company’s scheme. King, however, says he’s not happy yet, and is still concerned that BP will try to enforce the waivers despite what the company’s spokesperson claims. TPM points out that King may have good reason to doubt BP’s word on the matter, quoting Mobile, Ala. attorney Sid Jackson, who reminds us, "This is the same company that told the coast guard there was no leak."
