Mary Poppins at Belk Theater – This Tony Award-winning musical by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh is magical for both adults and children. It's based off of P.L. Travers original stories and the Walt Disney film about an extraordinary nanny (possessing supernatural-like qualities), who unites a family that's living worlds apart under the same roof. Costumes and stage props are elaborate, music is on target and overall performance is excellent. You’ll leave with songs like “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidociousis,” stuck in your head. Just an FYI: The show does run long, even though there’s an intermission. Continues at Belk Theater through Sept. 19. For more information, click here.

Rope at Duke Energy Theatre – In the smaller Blumenthal space, Duke Energy Theatre, Queen City Theatre Company is staging performances of Rope - based off the written work by Patrick Hamilton, which was brought to the big screen by Alfred Hitchcock in 1948. An erotic thriller, this show will have you engaged from start to finish. The story follows two males (in an obvious homosexual relationship), who kill and hide the body of their classmate in a chest, on which they do some hanky panky and later use to serve food upon to their house guests (family and friends of the deceased who are totally clueless, though in the end, suspecting of his whereabouts). The show leaves you with a strong sense of the dangers of superiority complexes, lack of morals and respect for human life. Side note: There's no intermission and the show runs a little over 100 minutes. Final performances are this week(end), Sept. 1-4, 8 p.m. For more information, click here.
