The Light Factory’s upcoming screening of the 1922 western film Big Stakes at Queens University on Sat., Jan. 8 may come as a silent surprise to some of you. Directed by Clifford S. Elfelt, the action-packed tale is diced with rivalry, rejection, romance and rescue. J.B. Warner stars as a Texan who falls in love with a Mexican girl and tries to win her over by participating in a Mexican jumping beans contest. After the larva snaps (and he realizes she didn’t want him after all), he dashes home to find he must save a blonde beauty from a dangerous Ku Klux Klan leader. The Devil Music Ensemble — a Boston-based trio of multi-instrumentalists known for adding hypnotic scores to cinema without sound — will accompany the screening with a live performance. $10. 8 p.m. Dana Auditorium at Queens University, 1900 Selwyn Ave. For more information, visit www.lightfactory.org.
