County Commissioners to debate taxpayer funding of a witch hunt

Posted By on Tue, Nov 8, 2011 at 12:01 PM

BREAKING NEWS: Our county is in such great shape that Mecklenburg County Commissioners have time to debate whether or not they should spend taxpayer dollars to root out an estimated 113 people who may or may not be drug users and who also happen to be welfare recipients.

Ding dong, the recession must be over!

WCNC reports that 1,300 people apply for public assistance in Mecklenburg County each month.

Wow. It really is refreshing to know that our county cares so much about those 1,300 people that they can forgo debates on issues that touch hundreds of thousands of others, such as the state of our educational system and mental healthcare programs, the increasing number of homeless on Char-Meck's streets and more to focus on one small group of people who may or may not be using drugs.

The question is: what will they do once they find out who is or isn't using drugs? Will that information be public? Will those people be denied assistance? Will the county help them beat their drug habits?

Here's an even better question: Why isn't our government debating whether or not it should re-legalize drugs so it can tax them? We all know the government could use the cash, and just think of all of the small businesses that would pop up — and employ people who wouldn't need public assistance, who could also pay taxes — to legally provide drugs, drug paraphernalia, drug-related products (like food, clothes, potions and more). Think of what re-legalizing drugs could do for our economy.

But, no: Let's spend time and money on a witch hunt so we can kick people when they're down. Way to go, Mecklenburg County!

After being attacked by swarms of mosquitos in Belize last month, I tried Itch-A-Way -- which is a cure all and worked like magic to cure my need to scratch.
