Toes will be tingling at Sneaker Con

When Jenny gave Tom Hanks' character a pair of Nike Cortez in Forrest Gump, he proclaimed them "the best gift anyone could ever get me in the whole world." Forrest might not have been the smoothest dude on the block, but that's hardly a reflection on true sneakerheads. After all, sneakers have been a part of cool-guy fashion and pop culture for decades, thanks to basketball (via Michael Jordan's Air Jordans) and hip-hop. Astonishingly, the collecting culture itself has maintained status as a sub - only the wildly obsessed participate.

The most devout collectors in Charlotte stand in line overnight at Black Sheep in South End to grab the latest limited edition releases. At Sneaker Con (also hosted in NYC and ATL), coming to Grady Cole Center this week, the geek-chic and shoe-obsessed of Charlotte will gather under one roof to buy, sell and trade some of the most sought-after footwear on the market. Toes will be tingling. For more information, visit www.sneakercon.com. $12. Dec. 8, 12 p.m.-7 p.m. Grady Cole Center, 310 N. Kings Drive.
