Get groovy at Knight Theater

Posted By on Sat, Dec 15, 2012 at 9:30 AM

Forget the chimneys, reindeer and stockings hung with care, because This Is the '60s is back in town. After a world premiere at Ovens Auditorium back in July, the nostalgiafest makes its 14th stop in an ongoing national tour, camping out at the cozier Knight Theater for one night only on Dec. 15. The brainchild of father-and-son team Jim and Greg Duffy, '60s began as a documentary the Fort Mill duo earmarked for The History Channel.

It mushroomed into a five-part extravaganza of overkill - The Early Years (1960-1963), The British Invasion (1964-1965), America Fights Back (1965-1967), Psychedelia (1967-1968), and Flower Power (1969-1970) - with all the wild glad rags, Peter Max graphics, tumultuous news clips of assassinations and protests, multi-screen projections, and quaint commercials they could throw at us in less than three hours. Plus music, music and even more music in a 33-song playlist that spans the decade, from Jefferson Airplane to Led Zeppelin, with Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Turtles, Cream, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Mamas & The Papas and, of course, The Beatles in between. $24.50-$39.50. Dec. 15, 8 p.m. Knight Theater, 430 S. Tryon St. 704-372-1000. www.blumenthalarts.org.
