Passion Pit at Uptown Amphitheatre tonight (6/13/13)

Posted By on Thu, Jun 13, 2013 at 8:47 AM

PASSION PIT
Slurring the lines between genres, Passion Pit's electro-infused blend of indie-rock and synthetics has garnered the band considerable recognition since its 2007 debut. Perhaps most impressive is the group's ability to juxtapose glittering pop instrumentals with falsetto vocals and guitar riffs that suggest the group's rock influences. Passion Pit's most recent album, Gossamer, features a blend of aggressive synth effects and keyboards, set to a steady beat, and strung together with concerning autobiographical lyrics. Though its latest single, "I'll be Alright," can be found climbing pop charts, the motivation seems a dark departure from the typical hip-hop club love ballads and whatever Taylor Swift sings about. But that's not surprising. Gossamer's long-awaited arrival comes as a result of front man Michael Angelakos ongoing battle with bi-polar disorder, which resulted in several cancelled tour dates and a prolonged return to recording. Despite the commercial effects of Angelakos' personal struggles, the rawness of his frustration grounds Gossamer with a uniquely personal feel, one seemingly absent from earlier releases focused on power-pop appeal. Although some tracks verge on the edge of redundancy, the oxford collared band's original style and energy excuses Passion Pit from a few overdone loops. With Cults. $30-$50. June 13, 7:30 p.m. Uptown Amphitheatre, 1000 N.C. Music Factory Blvd. 704-916-8970.

N.C. House proposals will wreck our schools

Posted By on Wed, Jun 12, 2013 at 10:10 AM

The N.C. House of Representatives revealed the education portion of its budget bill this week, and it's a sobering document that continues the current legislative session's unprecedented attack on public education in North Carolina. Remember, though, that the N.C. House actually leans a smidgen less to the far-right than the N.C. Senate - in other words, these ideas could get even worse by the time they make it through both houses. Here are some lowlights of what the House GOP wants:

The states GOP: leading us back to the good ol days
  • The state's GOP: leading us back to the "good ol' days"

A look ahead at Bonnaroo 2013

Posted By on Wed, Jun 12, 2013 at 9:00 AM

Just the thought of Bonnaroo makes me exhausted. I honestly don't know why I do this to myself. It's something akin to being a baseball scout going out to have a look at some new talent to see if you want to sign them to a contract. Instead of sports, I feel the need, as a music editor, to drive six hours to middle-of-nowhere Tennessee. While there, I give a listen to dozens of bands so that if they ever head toward Charlotte, I'll know if I should steer readers to check them out, or tell them to stay away.

This will be my sixth trip to Manchester. The "farm," as it's affectionately called. Nope, I don't go in an RV or book a hotel. I camp out in a tent, by myself, amidst a few hundred others in the press/guest camping area. I sweat, I drink lots of water and I see a lot of bands. A LOT of bands. This year, I'm looking to check out about 70. My feet hurt, and I haven't started walking from stage to stage yet.

It's how I cover 'Roo. It's not exactly pleasant and it's definitely exhausting, but something keeps bringing me back. Every year I leave and think, "I'm never going back there again..." and then the next year's lineup is announced and I think, "Where else can I see all of these bands in just a few days?"

A number of bands performing this year - Mumford & Sons, Portugal the Man, JD McPherson, Trombone Shorty, Foals, Paul McCartney, Cat Power, Matt & Kim, Baroness, Tom Petty - are ones that I've seen before, but there are dozens that I haven't. Those are the reason I'm heading back to Tennessee.

Here's a quick rundown of the top five (in no particular order) artists I haven't seen before who I'm looking forward to seeing at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival this year:

Valient Thorr at Tremont Music Hall tonight (6/12/13)

Posted By on Wed, Jun 12, 2013 at 8:24 AM

Valient Thorr
"The world is full of bills we cannot pay," howls Valient Thorr's frontbeard Valient Himself near the end of "No Strings Attached," a triumphant little anthem from the upcoming LP Our Own Masters. "Been saving up to pay them back," he continues, turning around what initially seemed to be sociopolitical commentary and drawing the listener into a big, sweaty bear hug. And that's one thing these Raleigh - err - Venus-based boogie-metal dudes do exceptionally well. The music's always a ton of fun, even when they rail against this system or that. The guitar heroics and absurd inverted motorcycle machismo practically scream "we're in this together." Maybe men are from Venus after all. With Gypsyhawk, Ramming Speed and Vulture. $13-$15. June 12, 9 p.m. Tremont Music Hall, 400 W. Tremont Ave. 704-343-9494.

R.I.P. Robert West, film curator, producer and former Charlottean

Posted By on Tue, Jun 11, 2013 at 5:00 PM

Whether they know it or not, Charlotte film lovers owe a debt of gratitude to the late Robert West. A lifelong devotee, producer and supporter of filmmaking, West died June 6 in Wilmington, NC, of Glioblastoma Multiforme (MFB), a form of terminal brain cancer. West was diagnosed in fall 2012 and had stepped down from his executive director position in early 2013.

From 1985 to 1999, West was curator of film and video at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. He led a renowned media program that began the Charlotte Film & Video Festival, a national independent film festival, and organized national touring film programs for documentaries featuring social justice issues. The Mint position cemented West's reputation and he was a frequent presence - as board member, arts funder, juror and idea guy - for a variety of statewide and national arts groups, including the National Endowment for the Arts, the NC Arts Council, the Sundance Film Festival and PBS. He was also a board member of the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture.

Is it Brad Pitt in World War Z or a WFAE listener trying to call into Charlotte Talks?
  • Paramount
  • Is it Brad Pitt in World War Z or a WFAE listener trying to call into Charlotte Talks?

The two Charlotte reviewers will offer their takes on the seasonal flicks they've already seen, such as Man of Steel, Before Midnight and Star Trek Into Darkness, as well as preview upcoming titles like World War Z, The East and The Lone Ranger.

One of the themes for this show will be the heavy use of CGI in summer blockbusters. Joining the Charlotte gang by phone will be Erik Nash, a visual effects supervisor who's been Oscar-nominated for his work on I, Robot and Real Steel and who has also worked on such blockbusters as Titanic, The Avengers and this summer's Iron Man 3.

Along with fortune and fame come paparazzi and tabloid headlines, even if you're the Avett Brothers from Concord, N.C. Around midnight on June 10, Seth Avett posted the following message on the Avett Brothers website:

To all the wonderful Avett Brothers fans...

Over the years, it has been my honor and privilege to share, through so many amazing experiences, a connection with you all that is very special to me. It is in the nature of this incredible exchange that I feel it appropriate to share a piece of personal news.

My wife and I have decided to end our marriage. We have been separated for some time. As I'm sure you will understand, this is a very difficult and painful time for us and our families. I want to wholeheartedly thank you for respecting our privacy in this matter and I ask sincerely for your prayers, support and understanding.

Much love and gratitude...

It's Seth's private life, so we won't speculate or comment other than to say - these aren't the kinds of headlines music fans are hoping for.
