Goodie Mob at the Fillmore *CANCELED* (9/5/2013)

Editor's note: This show is now listed as canceled.
GOODIE MOB
CeeLo Green is the wildly successful eccentric who strutted in peacock feathers at the Grammys and kicked down the doors to mainstream acceptance with addictive groovers like "Fuck You." So is it still relevant for him to speak truth to power? Considering CeeLo has reunited with dirty South hip-hop pioneers Goodie Mob, the answer is "Fuck yeah!" In the mid-'90s, Goodie Mob crunked up a mix of gospel harmonies, blaring horns, social consciousness and confrontation that rendered the bling-and-booty-infested East Coast/West Coast rap wars irrelevant. If anything, Goodie Mob's '90s-era raps about racism ring louder today, as Raleigh politicians backpedal furiously toward Jim Crow. With a new LP, Age Against the Machine, Goodie Mob has abandoned the visceral stomp of yore, veering into the smooth soul, prog rock and grinding electro favored by the Gnarls Barkley frontman. Though they've moved on musically, Goodie Mob still draws on the telling personal detail while hitting hard against bullying, racial profiling and the wasteland that is modern radio. CeeLo and crew may no longer need mainstream acceptance, but the mainstream sure as hell needs them. With Drop City Yacht Club. CANCELED. Sept. 5, 8 p.m. The Fillmore, 1000 N.C. Music Factory Blvd. 704-916-8970.
