First Drip (6/6/14): Plans unveiled for amateur sports development complex, more

City leaders got a peek at potential plans for turning the Bojangles' Coliseum/Ovens Auditorium site into an amateur sports development complex. "A field house would be built, an office complex, a 150 room hotel, also retail and restaurant space would be set up. 'I think it can be huge in terms of bringing in visitors to Charlotte,' Mayor ProTem Michael Barnes said. 'Creating new life in that part of the city.'"

Parking isn't just a problem for Center City and surrounding neighborhoods: Metal poles have popped up in parking spaces at Ballantyne Village shopping center after the original owner, who is now trying to sell his part of the property after a foreclosure, filed a lawsuit against MV Ballantyne Village, the group that owns the retail area of the Village. "Drivers say the spat is irritating. One said he had to drive around the lots for five to 10 minutes to find a spot."

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the day allied troops stormed Normandy during World War II. While President Obama spoke at a ceremony at Normandy American Cemetery, paratroopers at Fort Bragg will honor the soldiers who jumped into occupied France with a parachute jump.

Happy National Doughnut Day!
