First Drip (7/25/14): Senator pass revised charter school bill, packed flights on purpose, more

State House Democrats are going after a Senate bill that they say will conceal the salaries of for-profit charter school staff. Rep. Patricia Cotham, D-Mecklenburg, "the only Democrat on an eight-member committee created to reconcile conflicting bills previously approved by the House and Senate, says a staff lawyer told her that wording excludes employees hired by management companies, such as Charter Schools USA and National Heritage Academies. She refused to sign the committee report and worked to delay a House vote — hoping, she said, that bipartisan opposition will emerge if colleagues understand the bill."

Have you noticed flights feel more packed than usual? It's being done intentionally by airline companies to boost profits. American Airline's, for example, jumped 70 percent in the second quarter. Some passengers say they feel like cattle.

The "Best Damn Band in the Land" is without a leader. Ohio State University's marching band director, Jonathan Waters, has been fired over the "sexualized culture" within the institution, including rituals that called on students to march in their underwear, be addressed by explicit nicknames and perform sexually charged skits.

In the tragic case of yet another airline crash, investigators have located the remains of the "disintegrated" Air Algerie flight, in Mali, finding the black box but no survivors. Flight 5017 was carrying 116 people when it took off early Thursday from Burkina Faso to Algeria.
