FirstDrip (8/27/14): Obama visits Charlotte, Cannon faces sentencing, more

President Obama visited Charlotte yesterday and, during a speech at the American Legion convention, issued 19 executive actions that will help veterans, including increasing the availability of healthcare and mending the broken VA system. He also reaffirmed the U.S. would not engage in on-the-ground combat in Iraq to fight Islamic State militants.

Former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon could face sentencing as early as next week. His presentence investigation report is complete but sealed. Still, various news outlets have reported he could be sentenced on or after Sept. 3.

A 9-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed a gun-range instructor in Arizona who was showing her how to use a gun. Charles Vacca, 39, died after the Uzi the girl was shooting recoiled in her hands, sending the weapon over her head. He died in a hospital.

Thanks in part to the diplomatic efforts of Qatar, a U.S. journalist kidnapped in Syria has returned home after two years in captivity. "Peter Theo Curtis, 45, went missing in 2012 and was held by Nusra Front, al-Qaida's official wing in Syria, whose rivals, the militant group Islamic State, last week killed journalist James Foley. Curtis was released on Sunday."

The best view of two colliding galaxies.
