Cheap list: Greek Fest, Common Ground Festival and more

Going out in Charlotte doesn't have to be expensive. In fact, to prove that statement, we've compiled a list of cheap - $10 or less - things to do in the Q.C. this weekend. These events may vary, but they're all entertaining and they won't break your bank (piggy banks excluded).

Yiasou Greek Festival at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral: Longtime Charlotteans think of this festival as a holiday for good reason. Between traditional Greek food — Athenian-style fish, gyros, baklava and an array of delicious sweets — and entertainment, there’s a sense of pride that resonates at the festival, bringing families and friends together for a fun celebration. $3; children under 12 free. Sept. 4, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sept. 5-6, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sept. 7, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 600 East Blvd. www.yiasoufestival.org.

David Kroll: New Paintings at Hidell Brooks Gallery: The Seattle-based artist fuses landscapes and still lifes, but adds contemporary twists. Kroll goes deeper to juxtapose ideas about life, nature and the fluidity of change. Take, for example, his “Koi & Light Blue Vase,” which imposes a school of koi fish flapping above a vase. The fish flow freely and seem to represent natural and artificial, and ethereal vs. material. Reception on Sept. 5, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Exhibit runs through Oct. 31. Free admission. Hidell Brooks Gallery, 1910 South Blvd., Suite 130. 704-334-7302. www.hidellbrooks.com.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Fundraising Party at Bubble: The folks who make up Big Brothers Big Sister of Greater Charlotte - a non-profit organization that helps children to take positive steps toward the future and within community - are throwing this shindig with complimentary admission, appetizers and a glass of champagne. Go to be social, and donate to a good cause while you're at it. Sept. 5, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Bubble, 210 E. Trade St., Suite A200. www.bubblecharlotte.com.

The Common Ground Festival in Plaza-Midwood: This free street festival features live music (Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Big Daddy Love and more), art and craft beer (Birdsong, Triple C and more). It's a good time - and you can't beat the free admission! Sept. 6, 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. www.thecommongroundfestival.com.

Gay Men's Chorus of Charlotte Season 9 Kickoff Party at Petra's Piano Bar & Cabaret: Members of GMCC are hosting this party for the purpose of recruiting folks with worthy vocal chords and meeting Charlotteans for future support. Oh, and who doesn't like a good party? The afternoon event includes karaoke, food, a cash bar and prizes. Free admission. Sept. 7, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Petra's Piano Bar & Cabaret, 1919 Commonwealth Ave. www.gmccharlotte.org.
