Charlotte Hornet Gerald Henderson said he and his teammates wearing “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirts while warming up for Saturday’s home game against the Brooklyn Nets was about spreading awareness. “Everybody needs to get better – citizens, police, everybody can improve in terms of how we’re handling ourselves,” Henderson said Saturday night. The shirts, which have been worn by the Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers, refer to the death of Staten Island’s Eric Garner, who died as the result of a chokehold by a white New York City police officer. Tens of thousands marched nationwide Saturday to call attention to killings of unarmed black men by the police.
St. Louis County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch quietly released new Ferguson documents Saturday, saying the files were inadvertently excluded from the thousands of pages of other documents made public Nov. 24 after the grand jury decision.
Negotiators reached a watered-down deal at UN talks in Peru Saturday night in preparation for a global climate pact in Paris next year that has been criticised by activists as being “very weak.” The Lima agreement was reached after hours of debate between rich and poor countries. Developing nations had earlier rejected a draft deal that they claimed would allow rich countries to avoid responsibility over global warming.
The cab-hailing company Uber was promising free rides and refunds Monday for people fleeing central Sydney after coming under criticism for hiking prices during a hostage crisis that was unfolding there. Monday morning a gunman took an unknown number of hostages at the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in downtown Sydney. Christmas shoppers fled, offices were evacuated and streets closed.
