First Drip (1/09/15): Mint acquires Selma painting, Obama pushes free tuition, gospel great Crouch dies

The Mint Museum has acquired a large-scale painting depicting the historic civil rights events that unfolded in Selma, Ala. “Selma” (1965) by Barbara Pennington (1932 – 2013), measures nine feet across and was discovered by the artist’s niece, Charlotte resident Vicki Moreland, while going through Pennington’s studio shortly after her death. Mint Museum officials said the painting was rolled up in a corner and had not been seen in many years. They called it a “surprising discovery” that went counter to the abstract style that defined Pennington’s work during most of her career. The museum will observe the 50th anniversary of the civil rights events in Selma with a free public program on March 25.

Gospel legend Andráe Crouch died of a heart attack on Thursday afternoon at a Los Angeles hospital. The man many called “the Father of Gospel Music”, was admitted to the Northridge Hospital Medical Center on Saturday after years of battling diabetes and surviving multiple encounters with cancers. Some of his most recognizable songs include "Soon and Very Soon," "I Surrender All," "Through It All," "Let The Church Say Amen," and "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power."

In Knoxville, Tenn., this afternoon, President Obama will propose making two years of community college tuition-free for millions of students. He will include the program, which is subject to congressional approval, in his budget for the coming year and detail it in his State of the Union address.

In the very definition of "Too Soon," comedian Bill Cosby made a joke at a Canadian appearance that appeared to reference his recent allegations. A series of Tweets from National Post journalist Richard Warnica detailed the following at the London, Ontario show: A woman in the front row got up to go get a drink. Cosby asked her where she was going. She asked him if he wanted a drink. "You have to be careful about drinking around me," Cosby just said to a woman in the crowd. Loud gasps from the audience. The gasps then changed to cheers and applause. Security just pulled a man out of the crowd in London. "You are a rapist!" he yelled at Cosby on the way out.
