First Drip (4/7/15): Duke wins 5th national championship, Union County drama, more

Go sports! Duke beats out Wisconsin in the NCAA championship. Last night's win is Duke's 5th.

The drama continues in Union County. An appeals court has ordered a new trial in the budget dispute between the county's board of commissioners and the school board. A 2013 decision awarded the school board $91 million. The Observer reports: "Union commissioners have called the jury’s actions a 'runaway verdict' that, if it stood, would result in a 'catastrophic' tax increase or major cut in services. Their lawyers claimed the trial judge made a number of errors, including allowing the school board to present evidence of needs outside of its 2013-14 budget request.

Rolling Stone retracted its story of a fraternity-related gang rape on the campus of University of Virginia. A "report, published by the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and commissioned by Rolling Stone, said the magazine failed to engage in 'basic, even routine journalistic practice' to verify details of the ordeal that the magazine’s source, identified only as Jackie, described to the article’s author, Sabrina Rubin Erdely."

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul will announce his candidacy for president today.
