First Drip First Drip (5/6/15): DOT moves forward on toll lanes, despite fine print of contract, more

Despite the fact that some fine print in a contract could hold up future expansion on I-77, the Department of Transportation is moving forward with its contract with a private company to build toll lanes on I-77. Local officials say they were unaware of the noncompete clause that would require I-77 Mobility Partners be compensated if the DOT adds free lanes, and residents don't want the costly project either. What's really going on, DOT?
A city is only as healthy as its sickest. So the news yesterday that two Charlotte area health clinics received federal funding to increase access to care. "Charlotte Community Health Clinic has received a grant of $692,000, and the Cabarrus Community Health Center will receive $1.1 million," reports the Charlotte Business Journal.
A Raleigh police officer is suing Starbucks because he "suffered physical and emotional damage related to injuries that occurred after the lid popped off the cup of coffee he ordered in January 2012." The man says the burn caused a flareup of his Crohn's disease and he had to have a part of his intestine removed because of it.
The drought is pretty damn serious in California. For the first time, regulators passed emergency drought restrictions that would affect "tens of millions of Californians and tens of thousands of businesses," particularly those in Sacremento and inland.
