Con A De Arte returns w/ Pulitzer Prize photographer

Posted By on Mon, Jun 8, 2015 at 3:47 PM

When José Galvez was 10 years old, he wandered into Arizona Daily Star with a shoeshine box looking for work. Years later, the shoeshine boy transformed into a pioneering photographer for the Latino community - he even picked up a Pulitzer Prize for a Los Angeles Times project that involved documenting Latino life in California.

The award-winning photographer and journalist's work on Latinos' struggles for civil rights and advancement continues to shine through on black and white film. His shots have appeared across the United States and abroad. But his latest endeavors have brought him to Charlotte for an exhibit, Al Norte al Norte at Beatties Ford Road Library and for appearances at Con A De Arte (Spanish for "A is for Art").

The exhibit - which runs though June 30 - highlights Latino Americans and the economic impact of immigrant businesses, as well as the group's social, political and cultural impact. As part of ArtSí Charlotte’s Con A De Arte, Galvez will speak at two events, June 9-10.

In it's 12th year, Con A De Arte celebrates Latino art and culture through lectures, visual arts and performances. This year's festivities will also include appearances from multi-disciplinary artists Carlos Cruz and Rocio González, as well as presentations from artist's Luis Ardila, Zaire Kacz, Ivan Toth Depeña and Al Torres.

First Drip (6/8/15): Cowfish reopens after closing for illness

Posted By on Mon, Jun 8, 2015 at 10:41 AM

Popular SouthPark restaurant Cowfish Burger Sushi Bar closed temporarily this weekend after several employees reportedly came down with flu-like symptoms. The eatery was closed on Saturday but is now opened after consulting with the Mecklenburg County Health Department and giving the building a thorough cleaning and sanitizing.

Hasan Harnett of Harrisburg has been named the North Carolina Republican Party's first black chair. Hasan, who has served as minority outreach director for the state Republican Party, had the backing of Gov. Pat McCrory and U.S. Senators Richard Burr and Thom Thillis.

A 21-year-old man was shot and killed near his home in Concord on Saturday night, according to police. Officers found Loney Felder III lying in the road near the intersection of Meadowbrook and Cedarbrook lanes near 10:30 p.m. He died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Charlotte City Manager Ron Carlee is reportedly leaning toward selecting Deputy Chief Kerr Putney to replace Police Chief Rodney Monroe following his July 1 departure. Putney has spent his entire 23-year career with the CMPD. Many expect the national spotlight to be on Charlotte and the CMPD when the trial of Randall Kerrick, charged with voluntary manslaughter in the killing of Jonathan Ferrell in 2013, begins on July 20.

A four-year-old boy drowned at an apartment complex pool in northeast Charlotte on Sunday evening. First responders arrived to the Vista Vila apartments at around 8:30 p.m. and took the boy to the hospital where he later died. Police are investigating the incident.

Theater review: Seven Guitars

Posted By on Fri, Jun 5, 2015 at 10:49 AM

Up in St. Paul, Minnesota, I got to see the magic that Lou Bellamy can work when he gets his teeth into an August Wilson script. Working in the corner of a neighborhood school, Bellamy and his Penumbra Theatre company plumbed the darkness and fury of King Hedley II in a riveting 2003 production of epic proportions. I never expected to see the likes of that experience here in Charlotte, but Bellamy is the guest director of On Q Performing Arts’ current production of Seven Guitars, and you can glimpse a good chunk of that magic at Spirit Square.

Seven Guitars - GENA J

A couple of the same characters from Hedley, set in the 1980s, reappear in Seven Guitars as they were in 1948 – and we also get a hefty helping of King Hedley I, a crazed Caribbean peddler mystic who sees angels and butchers chickens. The story centers around Floyd Barton, who has cut a hit record in Chicago that is making him the toast of Pittsburgh, or at least a celeb in the Hill District he hails from.

First Drip (6/5/15): Final stretch of I-485 to open

Posted By on Fri, Jun 5, 2015 at 9:42 AM

The final stretch completing the 67-mile loop of Interstate 485 will open today after a 1 p.m. ribbon cutting ceremony. The 5.7 mile stretch at the northeastern part of the interstate will complete a project nearly three decades in the making.

The Charlotte Independence, the city's semi-professional soccer team, and investors began planning construction of the county-owned Ramblewood Soccer Complex on Thursday. Consulting firm Nussli has promised to complete a 4,700-seat temporary stadium over the next week where the team will complete the current season and likely play until at least 2017.

Über will begin expanding rides in northern Mecklenburg County and parts of Cabarrus County this weekend, offering rides in Cornelius, Concord, Davidson and Huntersville. Uber's main competitor, Lyft, already operates in Huntersville and Concord, but not Davidson or Cornelius.

A world-class paralympian who lives in Charlotte is asking the public for help finding his missing prosthetic legs. Someone broke into Paul Peterson's apartment on Wednesday afternoon and stole the prosthetic legs he uses to train and compete for races after losing his right leg as a teenager following a motorcycle accident. Peterson uses different feet, or blades, for different races and each blade costs between $4,000 and $6,000. The thief stole three blades.

Today is National Donut Day and some Charlotte-area shops are offering free donuts or great deals. Krispy Kreme locations are offering a free donut of any flavor to each customer with no purchase required. Dunkin' Donuts will be offering a free donut with any beverage purchase and is unveiling two new flavors: Chips Ahoy! Creme and Chips Ahoy! Crunch.
