The South Carolina House approved a bill that will remove the Confederate flag from state Capitol grounds early this morning, following more than 13 hours of debate. The House passed the bill 94-20, easily surpassing the two-thirds margin needed, and will now go to Governor Nikki Haley's desk. The flag will come down within 24 hours of her signing it, which she has said she will do.
For a second time, a judge has denied former CMPD officer Randall Kerrick's attorneys' request for a venue change for his upcoming trial for the killing of unarmed Jonathan Ferrell in 2013. Attorneys said Charlotte jurors have been biased by heavy local media coverage. On the night Ferrell was killed, he wrecked his car and approached a nearby home to look for help. The homeowner thought Ferrell was trying to break-in and called police. When Kerrick arrived on the scene, Ferrell approached him and Kerrick opened fire, killing Ferrell. The trial is set to begin on July 20.
Austin, Texas-based investment firm Dimensional Fund Advisors has announced it will open an East Coast regional headquarters in Charlotte, bringing 316 jobs and investing $105 million in a new facility. DFA will receive $10.3 million in incentives, based on the creation of jobs, by the end of 2020. The company will lease office space Uptown initially but is finalizing a new building set to be finished by the first quarter of 2018.
A water main broke in south Charlotte this morning, closing a section of Park Road for the entire day, according to Charlotte Water. The break happened at the intersection of Park Road and Seneca Place. Crews estimate water will be turned back on for nearby businesses by 11 a.m., but repairing the road where the break happened is expected to take until after evening rush hour.
Free-agent point guard Jeremy Lin has agreed to terms with the Charlotte Hornets, according to the sources. Lin first broke the news himself on Instagram, posting the Hornets logo and "#BuzzCity," beginning speculation on social media until NBA sources confirmed it. Lin, the subject of "Linsanity" when he became a sensation while playing for the New York Knicks, has since played a backup role for the Houston Rockets and will now be backing up starting Hornets point guard Kemba Walker.
