First Drip First Drip (7/13/15): Voting rights trial starts today

A federal lawsuit challenging certain aspects of provisions to a 2013 North Carolina law regarding voting rights is beginning in Winston Salem today. The trial stems from three lawsuits, filed by the U.S. Justice Department, NAACP and others, which claim the provisions, passed by the Republican-led N.C. General Assembly and signed by Gov. Pat McCrory, weakened the ability of minority voters to influence an election. The trial is expected to last two to three weeks.
The body of a swimmer who drowned on the Catawba River on Sunday was found about 30 feet from where he went in the water. West Mecklenburg fire officials said the man drowned between Mount Holly and the Whitewater Center. He was believed to be a good swimmer when he went into the water during a party with friends. This is the second person to drown in that area in a month.
A man is in the hospital in serious condition after being shot multiple times in southwest Charlotte last night. The shooting happened following an altercation between two groups of people at the South Oak Crossing apartments at around 11 p.m. Sunday. Police are still looking for the shooter.
Queens University is facing a lawsuit from a former student who says she was sexually assaulted and the college didn't do enough to help her. The student said she was raped in her dorm room in 2012. Court documents say the suspect admitted to the crime and was charged with second-degree rape with force, but was not expelled. He wasn't arrested until six months later.
Kemthia Garlins, 20, is facing charges in a car wreck that took the life of 16-year-old Autumn Plyler in Union County on Saturday night. Garlins is being charged with DWI. Police said Plyler was sitting on the lap of someone sitting in the middle of the rear seat of the SUV and not wearing a seatbelt. Garlins reportedly ran off the right side of the road and overcorrected twice before hitting a tree. Five of the seven people in the car were taken to the hospital.
