First Drip First Drip (7/27/15): Charlotte City Council to decide on millions in spending tonight

Charlotte City Council will hold one its few summer business meetings tonight, and will consider spending millions on sports and economic development deals. Topics on the agenda include covering $3 million of the estimated $6 million cost involved with hoisting the 2017 NBA All Star Game, approving another $23 million on upgrading Bank of America Stadium and approving $7 million in tax breaks to draw Dimensional Fund Advisors to Charlotte. 

A Mount Pleasant woman reportedly suffered minor injuries after being bit by a small shark off the coast of Edisto Beach, South Carolina. The 35-year-old was given stitches after the bite, which had happened in waist-deep water, left her with a small cut and two puncture wounds on her foot. 

A 15-year-old Gaston County girl who was severely injured in a horseback riding accident has died, Carolinas Healthcare Systems said this morning. Destiny Stafford was riding a horse Saturday when she was thrown off and kicked in the head. Hundreds of neighbors and fellow students gathered last night outside Stuart Cramer High School, where Stafford would have been a sophomore in August. 

Organizers of Charlotte Pride have announced the 2015 recipients of the organization's Champions of Pride Awards. This year's winners include Charlotte City Council-member John Autry, local LGBTQ archivist Joshua Buford and Union County high school student Gabby Hubert. 

Charlotte activists Bree Newsome and James Tyson are to appear in court this morning to receive a court date to appear and face charges on defacing state property for the duo's action that resulted in Newsome removing the Confederate flag from statehouse grounds in Columbia, South Carolina in June. The two could face three years in prison and a maximum $5,000 fine. Their court date will be some time in the next 90 to 180 days.
