First Drip First Drip (8/3/15): Opening statements wrap in Kerrick trial

Opening statements in the trial of Randall Kerrick, facing charges of involuntary manslaughter in the killing of unarmed Jonathan Ferrell, wrapped up around 10:15 a.m. this morning. The prosecution explained for jurors how Ferrell was crawling after being shot by Kerrick when he was shot again. The defense claimed Ferrell tackled Kerrick into a ditch, after the prosecution stated Kerrick was backpedaling while shooting at Ferrell and fell into the roadside ditch himself.
Two separate shootings in east Charlotte on Sunday left one man dead and two people injured. In the first incident, at about 1:30 p.m., a man was shot and killed in a home on Blendwood Drive, near the intersection of Eastway Drive and The Plaza. A suspect was arrested and charged with the murder. At about 9 p.m. a drive-by shooting on The Plaza near Milton Road injured two. Police did not release the names of the victims, but said one was seriously injured.
A second Charlotte real estate legend has died in as many months, as John Crosland Jr., chairman emeritus of real estate firm Crosland, passed away over the weekend. Crosland, 86, had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for several years. He was the company’s president and chief executive until 1999 and retired as chairman in 2007. Crosland, formed in 1937, developed well-known projects such as Birkdale Village, StoneCrest, Sharon Corners, Blakeney and Latta Arcade. Crosland Jr. passed away nearly six weeks after the passing of the Charlotte real estate icon H. Allen Tate Jr.
The FBI raided a tattoo parlor in Belmont on Saturday for reasons that were still unclear early Monday, as the case remains sealed until the defendant's first court appearance, which is expected to take place sometime on Monday. Agents raided Capone's Tattoo Parlor in Belmont and a nearby Mount Holly home that neighbors said is owned by the owner of Capone's.
Staff at Gaston County Animal Shelter say they will need to euthanize 12 dogs and up to 20 cats if they're not rescued in the next two days in order to make room to have the shelter's floors resurfaced over the next two weeks. Staff said they will extend their hours to stay open between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. today and tomorrow.
