Lunch Break (9/21/15): BofA shareholders to vote on bank's decision to name Moynihan CEO and chairman tomorrow

Posted By on Mon, Sep 21, 2015 at 2:10 PM

Shareholders at Bank of America's annual shareholders' meeting will vote on the bank's decision to make CEO Brian Moynihan chairman last fall, ignoring a 2009 vote from shareholders to keep the two positions separate. Some large groups of shareholders, including CtW Investment Group, have voiced their disapproval of the decision and the bank announced in May they would bring it to a vote at tomorrow's meeting.

Despite passing a new state budget that was signed into law on Friday, the North Carolina General Assembly is back in session today and will be for at least the next week as they discuss a few bills that have not yet been passed. Those bills include a bond referendum, a tax incentive increase for businesses looking to come to North Carolina and a privatization of Medicaid. If these bills are not passed, it would reportedly have a drastic effect on the newly passed budget.

Police believe the man who shot and killed a woman and man before killing himself in northwest Charlotte on Saturday was a jealous ex-boyfriend of the woman. Police said 27-year-old Melvin Ashby shot and killed 37-year-old Judith Causey and shot another man who was not named and is currently in the hospital in critical condition. Neighbors said the inured man is Causey's current boyfriend. Police said they responded to a domestic disturbance call involving Ashby at the same address two hours prior to the killings.

The prosecution of two North Carolina teens for allegedly sending nude photos to each other consensually has made headlines internationally, and even the lawmaker who drew up the law used to charge the couple has said the case is "appalling" and the law is being misused. Cormega Copening, who was 16 years old at the time the photos were taken, is being charged with five felony counts of sexually exploiting a minor, himself, and could face up to 10 years in prison. His girlfriend, Brianna Denson, also 16 at the time, could face up to four years in prison.

The Mecklenburg County Health Department has announced it found elevated levels of contaminants in Little Sugar Creek between East 36th and North Brevard streets. Testing results showed elevated levels of colorless liquids used in different industrial and commercial processes called trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene, officials said. They warned that residents should not drink, fish or bathe in the creek's waters.

First Drip (9/18/15): Anti-government extremists indicted after foiled plot to kill government agents

Posted By on Fri, Sep 18, 2015 at 10:54 AM

A federal grand jury indicted an anti-government extremist from Gastonia on charges of conspiring to violate federal firearms laws and other gun and drug charges. According to an affidavit, Walter Eugene Litteral and others were convinced the Jade Helm military exercise in the southwest U.S. was a front for the government to begin enforcing martial law and they planned to lure federal agents onto a piece of land in Clover, South Carolina, and kill them with assault rifles and explosives.

Legislators gave their final approval for a new budget that will finance the state's government through June 2017 this morning. Governor Pat McCrory has said he will sign the budget into law before a temporary spending plan currently funding the state expires tonight. A handful of Republicans negotiated the budget and it has been criticized by many Democrats. Many of the votes approving the budget were along party lines.

The new state budget, expected to be finally approved by Gov. Pat McCrory today, will place a $500,00 cap on state funding for future light rail projects. The cap wouldn't affect extension of the current Lynx Blue Line but could stifle proposals for similar projects throughout the city. The NC Department of Transportation will spend a total of about $400 million on the city's two current light-rail projects. City leaders have explored ideas such as building another light rail that would go from Uptown to Matthews and the Union County line.

One person was reportedly shot at Herrin Avenue and North Davidson Street in NoDa last night around 10 p.m. Police said one person was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. No one was arrested in connection with the shooting.

A 12-year-old autistic boy is safe at home in Union County after wandering away from home yesterday evening and spending the entire night outdoors. Police said the boy wandered off at about 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and was found when he approached deputies near his home around 7 a.m. today.

Totally free "Carnival de Resistance" opens today

Posted By on Thu, Sep 17, 2015 at 10:46 AM

The Carnival de Resistance is coming to Area 15, and everything about it is free. No, really. And that’s the point.

Branded as a “traveling carnival, village, and school for cultural transformation,” organizer Carlos Espin says it’s really about introducing Charlotteans to the idea that “money is not the answer – we are the answer to the world’s woes,” he says. “The wealth we seek is each other, it’s coming together,” he added.

With that in mind, everyone participating in the festival is volunteering to offer food, education, services (see Elegance with Excellence Event Planning), or as entertainment (see Brown Eyes Music  and JustHis League).

While it’s not specifically described as a Christian event, many of the organizers and volunteers are Christians and the event’s description has religious undertones that run counter to the exasperatingly popular “prosperity gospel.”

“It’s an anomaly. It’s different from what you’re fed every day,” says Ivan Mendez, a local Christian artist and carnival volunteer who says Espin is his mentor.

Here’s how the carnival’s Charlotte stop is described on Area 15’s website:

The Carnival de Resistance is coming to town Sept 18 – 20, 2015. This multi-talented Carnival crew, made up of artists and activists, will converge at Charlotte’s own Area 15 to reconstruct the big top and midway, village and school. On the lot of this colorful compound the Carnival will weave the worlds of art, activism and faith and all events are free to the public! The days will be filled with thought provoking performance, playful engagement in the midway, sacred space for song and theological reflection, and learning spaces which feature grassroots efforts, community artists and local businesses.

Espin says the performers arrived in North Carolina about a week ago and have been hard at work practicing their performances.
