News Lunch Break (10/5/15): Hurricane Joaquin causes problems throughout Carolinas, offshore

Heavy rain has caused serious flooding throughout South Carolina and taken the lives of six people, according to Gov. Nikki Haley. She said the likes of the rainstorm that hit South Carolina and brought as much as two feet of rain to some cities hasn't been seen in the area in 1,000 years. According to reports, 381 roads are closed and 30,000 people are without power. One person has died in North Carolina flooding. Haley has another press conference planned for 11:30 a.m. that can be seen live here. 

Ocean Isle Beach, a popular vacation spot for North Carolina families, is at risk of losing part of its land to the ocean, as recent rains have again raised tidal flooding concerns that have become an issue over recent years. Pictures taken over the weekend show the tide coming up onto people's property  on the east side of the island sometimes as far back as four rows. Some homes have already been lost to erosion in recent years on the island's east end. 

A cargo ship last heard from during a distress call sent from near the eye of Hurricane Joaquin is believed sunk with 33 aboard, including 28 Americans. The Coast Guard reportedly found a survivor suit with unidentifiable remains and a heavily damaged lifeboat they believe to be from El Faro, TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico. Officials are still looking for a second lifeboat, but believe the window in which survivors could remain alive is rapidly closing. 

The Carolina Panthers beat division rival the Tampa Bay Buccaneers easily yesterday, winning 37 - 23 on the strength of the defense creating five turnovers, keeping the ball in the Panthers' hands for much of the day. The team is off to just its second 4 - 0 start in franchise history, and the first in more than a decade. 

The NC Department of Transportation has begun dispensing more than $147.7 million in gas tax funds to municipalities that have applied, with $20.4 million going to Charlotte, the most of any city receiving funds. Gas tax funds are distributed by NCDOT and used for local road. bikeway, greenway and sidewalk projects.
