Lunch Break (10/12/15): Racial tensions underscore allegations that Clark not fit to serve as superintendent

A parent's email campaign that questions Ann Clark's qualifications to continue serving as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools superintendent and places the blame on her for closing 10 mainly minority schools five years ago has gained support from state legislators and faith leaders. Residents are expected to show up at tomorrow's CMS Board of Education meeting, but the board chairperson Mary McCray has already stated she will enforce the rules that state public speakers cannot address individual CMS board members.

A ghost bike memorializing a biker killed at a dangerous intersection near NoDa has been returned to its spot after being taken out by yet another car accident at the location. Cycling advocates placed the bike at the corner of Parkwood Avenue and Hawthorne Lane following the death of Al Gorman during a car accident on September 13. Following that accident, Creative Loafing reported on calls from the cycling community for safer infrastructure. The bike was placed back at the intersection yesterday as a reminder for drivers to slow down and watch for cyclists.

Police said a man drove to a a gas station in east Charlotte after being shot in the leg many blocks away in the Belmont neighborhood this morning. The cashier said he was alerted by a customer to a man in the parking lot who appeared to be shot in the leg. Police arrived and found the man in his car, who then jumped out and began yelling. Police said they believe the man drove to the gas station on the corner of Eastway Drive and The Plaza after being shot near 16th Street and Siegle Avenue.

A school bus was involved in a crash this morning in front of Myers Park High School, but nobody was reported injured. It's unclear what caused the crash, which happened at about 7:45 a.m. on Colony Road.

Police are investigating a murder they say happened this morning in a motel room in Shelby. The Shelby Police Department responded to the Super 8 on East Dixon Boulevard just before 4:30 a.m. and found a man dead in a second-floor room. Police have not released the victim's name or any suspect information yet.
