News Lunch Break (10/13/15): Kuechly cleared to play on Sunday

Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly was reportedly cleared by a neurologist and removed from concussion protocol this morning, leaving him open to practice this afternoon and return to the field to play this Sunday for the first time since Week 1. The Panthers will face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
University of South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier is expected to announce his retirement at a press conference at noon today. He is in his 11th season as the Gamecocks' head coach, and is 0-4 in the Southeastern Conference for the first time in 23 years coaching in the league. The team is expected to name offensive line coach Shawn Elliot as interim head coach at the press conference. UPDATE: At the press conference, Spurrier announced he was not retiring, but resigning. He said it was doubtful that he will ever coach again, but that he doesn't know what the future holds.
Police are now saying a woman shot in the back in Rock Hill on Sunday was shot by her 2-year-old grandson, who found a gun left in the backseat of a vehicle they were traveling in by a family member. The shooting victim's sister could face charges for leaving the gun out and accessible. South Carolina law requires guns to be secured in a closed compartment. The loaded .357 revolver also did not have a safety, police said.
Charlotte Department of Transportation has announced a slew of road closures that will affect traffic throughout Uptown and beyond during the weekend and into next week. The road closures include South Church Street between West Third Street and West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from Friday morning to Sunday night, Southbound South Caldwell Street between East Third Street and East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on Saturday morning. In west Charlotte, Donald Ross Road between West and Wilkinson boulevards will be closed all of next week. A block of Commonwealth Avenue between The Plaza and St. Julien Street will close on Monday until mid-November.
Democratic presidential nominees will take the stage in their first debate for their party's nomination tonight. The debate will be televised on CNN at 9 p.m. CNN has said they will leave Vice president Joe Biden the opportunity to join Hilary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and three lesser known employees if he decides to run, even if he decides as late as today.
