News Lunch Break (10/30/15): Superintendent Clark introduces transgender bullying video to be shown to CMS students

CMS Superintendent Ann Clark introduced a locally made documentary about transgender teens and the issues they face in schools to a room of city leaders, parents and other community members yesterday, and said it will now become mandatory viewing for CMS students. The 11-minute video, titled Souls of Our Students: A Transgender Focus, was made by Judy Schindler, who gained Clark's support before starting on the $20,000 project. It features a Providence High School student speaking about his transition experience and the bullying he faced. The video can be viewed below.
One person was injured in an accident involving a school bus in south Charlotte this morning, but no students were on the bus at the time, officials said. A car smashed into the back of the bus around 7:30 a.m., and the driver of the car suffered minor injuries. The accident happened on Tyvola Road near South Boulevard. The driver was treated by medic on the scene, and no one else was injured.

— WBTV News (@WBTV_News) October 30, 2015Chester police have reportedly arrested and charged 57-year-old Michelle Johnson in the hit-and-run death of 11-year-old La’darious Wylie. The boy was struck on Monday morning in the South Carolina town, and he died on Wednesday from the resulting injuries. Johnson has been charged with hit-and-run with duties of drivers involved in accident resulting in death or serious personal injury. The Center of Literacy Through Technology, where Wylie attended school as a fifth-grader, is reportedly hoping to work with Wylie's family to find a way for the school to honor him, and First Citizens Bank branches are taking donations in Wylie's name that will go directly to helping his family with expenses.

— Greg Suskin (@GSuskinWSOC9) October 29, 2015Nearly 150 prisoners will be returning to Charlotte following today's release of 6,000 non-violent drug offenders nationwide in an attempt to relieve overcrowding in the U.S. prison system. About 10 to 15 prisoners who live in Charlotte are released in an average month. More of the prisoners being released today reportedly have addresses in Charlotte than most places in the country.
Six adults and five children have been displaced by an apartment fire early this morning in north Charlotte. The fire started at about 2:15 a.m. on Rumple Road, officials said. No one was injured during the fire, which was caused by a couch being placed too close to a heater, according to a tweet from the Charlotte Fire Department. The Red Cross is helping shelter the family while they try to find new housing.
