Lunch Break (1/4/15): Officer shot, suspect killed while police serve warrant in west Charlotte last night

A suspect related to a body found in Gastonia last week was shot and killed by police last night after shooting at officers and hitting one in the ankle. The officer was transported to Carolinas Medical Center and treated for "minor" injuries. Police have not yet released the name of the suspect who was killed. They did say that officers were serving a warrant in relation to the death of Norris Martin, found dead in a burning car in Gastonia last Wednesday. Police believe Martin was killed in Charlotte before his body was brought to Gastonia. Police have already arrested James Evan in that case and charged him with murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, breaking and entering, possession of a firearm by a felon and kidnapping. The Panthers wrapped up a near-perfect regular season on Sunday evening with a 38-10 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, putting them at 15-1 to end the season and enter the playoffs with guaranteed home-field advantage up to the Super Bowl. The Panthers will have a "bye" during the wild card round of the playoffs, and won't play again until Sunday, January 17. On that day, they'll play the lowest seed remaining following next Sunday's first round of playoff games. They'll either face the Redskins, Packers or Seahawks, with kickoff scheduled for 1:05 p.m. on Jan. 17. (Ryan Pitkin) 

At a workshop today, the Charlotte City Council is expected to make a decision on how Vi Lyles, its Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization representative, should vote in an upcoming vote on the existing 10-year roads plan, including the controversial I-77 toll lanes that are already under construction. Governor Pat McCrory called for the CRTPO to vote one final time on the issue following severe backlash against the toll roads leading up to the beginning of construction. Lyles' vote holds the most weight on the CRTPO, counting for 46 percent of the total vote. The CRTPO's final vote will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20. (Trish Williford, WSOC) 

A man in Salisbury was allegedly set up and robbed by a woman pretending to have car trouble on the side of the road over the weekend, according to reports. Police said Todd Motley stopped to help Blanca Alejandre, who claimed to be have car trouble while attempting to pick up her baby, on Sunday morning and that's when a masked men with a gun appeared and relieved Motley of his pickup truck. The stolen truck was found elsewhere in Salisbury and Alejandre was later arrested alongside Juan Alonso, who was in possession of Motley's wallet. (Associated Press) 

The fact that nobody picked the winning numbers for Saturday night's Powerball drawing sets up a $400 million drawing on Wednesday night, one of the largest in Powerball history. The lump sum would equal out to around $244.8 million. So good luck to you if you're into that sort of thing, but for the rest of us, here's to a few days of being held up in gas station lines even more than usual. (Sheldon Shafer, The Courier Journal)
