Lunch break (3/11/16): Hundreds of homes without water in southwest Charlotte, Hornets sign only Mexican NBA player

More than 250 homes near Sandy Porter Road in southwest Charlotte remain without water following a construction accident. Water service was abruptly stopped Thursday night at around 5 p.m. when a pipe that supplies water to the area was severed by contractors laying fiber. Because of the extensive damage, the pipes need to be dug out and replaced. Crews were at the scene early this morning, but the repairs are expected to take a while. Meanwhile bottled water is being provided to residents. (Fox46 Staff)

The Charlotte Hornets signed point guard Jorge Gutierrez for the rest of the season this morning, meaning the only Mexico native in the NBA – who was playing in the developmental league just a month ago – will be with the team through its potential playoff run. Gutierrez replaced Brian Roberts, who was traded to the Miami Heat at the trade deadline, and has been playing sparsely behind star point guard Kemba Walker and backup Jeremy Lin, but has apparently impressed coach Steve Clifford while he's been on the floor. CMPD continues to search for the suspect behind a carjacking and shooting that left a security guard hospitalized early this morning. The security guard was reportedly driving down Rozelles Ferry Road at around 3 a.m. when a pedestrian flagged him down. When the guard pulled over to assist the man, the suspect raised a gun and began shooting. The suspect then stole the vehicle and fled the scene, leaving the guard to suffer gunshot wounds to his leg and arm. The victim managed to approach homes on the nearby Roslyn Avenue for help, and that’s when police were called to the scene. Officers have not released a description of the suspect, but believe he is driving a silver Toyota Corolla. (WSOC Staff)

Police and parents in Gaston County are on the lookout for a man who has allegedly been luring children to his car after a concerned mother’s post was shared over 2,000 times on Facebook. In the post, the mother explains that a man drove a black Dodge Dart in front of her Goble Street home and beckoned her children to the car. Another parent has come forward after a driver attempted to lure her 11-year old daughter to his car by honking and calling out to her. The 11-year old later identified the car as a Dodge Dart when her mother showed her a picture. (WCNC Staff)

Police have released the name of a man who was shot and killed during an incident that occurred around noon yesterday in east Charlotte. Police say 24-year-old Michael Jeffries, Jr. was pronounced dead on the scene of a shooting at an apartment complex near the intersection E. W.T. Harris Boulevard and Albemarle Road. Another shooting victim was found at the scene and transported to the hospital while yet another man, who was later found to be connected to the shooting, was dropped off at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center with serious injuries. It's unclear whether the three men were the only ones involved with the shooting or suspects are still on the loose. (Ryan Pitkin, CL)
