News Lunch Break (5/9/16): McCrory sues federal government for right to discriminate, three Charlotte murders on Saturday

Gov. Pat McCrory has responded to today's deadline to announce a "remedy" to the discriminatory House Bill 2 by filing suit against the U.S. Department of Justice, which sent the letter. McCrory, who faces the loss of billions of dollars in federal funding due to the discriminatory nature of HB2, called the DOJ's reading of the Civil Rights Act "radical." The DOJ informed McCrory last week that the law is in direct violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, and gave him and the University of North Carolina system until today to fix it or announce that they wouldn't be enforcing it. McCrory is expected to speak publicly about the lawsuit at 1 p.m. (Joshua Berlinger, CNN)

Arguments will begin this afternoon in a lawsuit against south Charlotte megachurch Cavalry Church and its child development director. Four families involved in the lawsuit have alleged that their children were expelled or asked to leave the church's school because of real or perceived disabilities, and two more may join the lawsuit soon. Cavalry's legal representation is expected to ask that the lawsuit be dismissed today. (Sharon Smith, WBTV)
Police have released the names of three victims killed in Charlotte on Saturday in separate incidents. Police responded to an assault call in west Charlotte near Mount Holly at around 1:45 a.m. on Saturday and found a man suffering from apparent non-life threatening injuries from a stabbing. Despite the initial scope of the injuries, the victim, identified later as 19-year-old Skylar Riker, died at the hospital. This is an ongoing investigation. (Ryan Pitkin)
Police have already made an arrest in the murder of Nmateen Doe, 28, found dead in his yard in west Charlotte just three hours after the above incident took place. The two incidents aren't believed to be related and Doe is believed to have been arguing with his killer before being shot. This morning, police arrested Deion Brevard for his involvement in the murder. (Ryan Pitkin)

Later that same day, across the city in east Charlotte on John Penn Circle, police responded to an assault call and found 24-year-old Jamal Caple suffering from a gunshot wound. The call came in at around 4:15 p.m. He was pronounced dead on the scene. This is an ongoing investigation. (Ryan Pitkin)
