Lunch Break (5/19/16): Lights out in Uptown; SC detective accused of sexually coercive behavior against rape victim

A wreck in Uptown this morning caused power outages in the area, affecting power lights and snarling traffic in areas. About 1,400 people were reportedly left without power and CMPD was reporting to multiple intersections where the traffic lights had gone out. The power was expected to be restored by 11:30 a.m. (Justin Pryor, WCCB)

No one was injured in a wreck involving a school bus near West Charlotte High School this morning, officials said. A car smashed into the back of the CMS bus on Southwest Boulevard near Beatties Ford Road just after 9 a.m. this morning. (Joe Marusak & Davie Hinshaw, Charlotte Observer)

A lawsuit filed yesterday alleges that a former Horry County, South Carolina detective threatened to keep a rape victim from seeing her children if she refused to participate in a "nude catfight" with another woman that would be filmed and shown to "a group of men in the area" who like to watch such things. Now former detective Allen Large was reprimanded after the woman originally reported his behavior to his department in May of last year. In June, he allegedly sexually assaulted her following a court date and was terminated from the force after that incident. Several months ago, Large was sued by another sexual assault victim for similar behavior. (Ian Cross & Connor McCue, WBMF via WBTV)

It is still unclear what caused the disappearance of Egypt Air Flight 804, which officials believe has crashed somewhere off the Greek island of Karpathos. There were 66 people on the flight, including 56 passengers and 10 crew members. An Egyptian aviation official said the possibility of a terrorist attack is greater than that of mechanical failure, while a Russian security official is quoted as saying the crash "in all likelihood" was caused by a terrorist attack.
