News Lunch Break (6/3/16): Shooting suspect killed by CMPD officers last night identified

Police have identified the man shot and killed by CMPD officers last night as 18-year-old Rodney Rodriguez Smith. He was shot by two officers after allegedly shooting a fellow passenger on a CATS bus that was driving down North Tryon Street. According to CMPD, a call came in at 10:14 p.m. stating that a male victim had been shot on a bus and the male suspect had gotten off the bus and began walking toward the city. Two officers — identified this morning as Michael Bell and Garret Tryon — observed Smith walking down the street and confronted him. They reportedly determined him to be armed with a handgun and at some point during the encounter "perceived an imminent deadly threat" and opened fire. Neither officer was injured and the original shooting victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. (Ryan Pitkin)

A car struck a utility pole on Eastway Drive early this morning and the accident is expected to shut the road down at Eastway Crossings in both directions until this afternoon. A woman driving an SUV reportedly struck the utility pole just after midnight this morning. Officials recommend Briar Creek and Norland roads as detours. (Fox46 Staff) 

A group of people were robbed at gunpoint by one man in east Charlotte this morning, ending in one victim being shot multiple times. Police say the robbery happened on Four Seasons Lane at about 1:30 a.m. this morning. The suspect shot one of the victims multiple times in the back. He was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center and is expected to be OK. No arrests have been made. (WSOC Staff)  

The North Carolina House voted yesterday to cancel plans for the construction of toll lanes on Interstate 77 between Uptown and Mooresville. The controversial lanes haven't met their demise yet, however, as the bill calling for the cancellation of the agreement with the private developer in charge of building them still has to be approved by the state senate.
