American Idol - And then there were 12...

Posted By on Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 1:45 PM

America's biggest karaoke contest narrowed the contestants down to the Top 12 last night.

I think people were shocked or glad to see 18-year-old Danny Noriega get the boot. I would be on the happy side because I thought he wasn't a good singer and kind of annoying.

Ryan Seacrest called him "one of our most courageous performers ever." Huh? Why? Because he was flamboyant and argued with Simon Cowell? I don't get it...

I think Asia'h Epperson was a lot more courageous for showing up at the auditions two days after her father died.

I think Idol needs to find new definitions for courage...and talent.

Would this be favoritism?

I was sorry to see Danny go, which I think had more to do with his flamboyantly effeminate mannerisms than his vocal ability. He's just as good a singer as the favored David Archuleta, but one thing I have noticed about Simon Cowell over the years is that he sets his sights on what he perceives to be a contestant's marketability early on, and judges their performances to this cynical standard, so someone like Danny Noriega sings well and gets trashed, while someone like... say Jason Castro (who ran out of breath twice during his performance last week and couldn't finish the lyric!) sail through with the highest of praise from all three hack judges.
