Stone Temple Pilots w/ Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
Aug. 17, 2008
The Deal: 90s alt-rockers Stone Temple Pilots return to the stage, bring along retro-rock trio Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
The Good: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club followed TAB the band with a retro rock set full of feedback and laid-back vibes. It was a good start to the high-energy set of Stone Temple Pilots. After a bit of a delay, the band hit the stage and opened with the slow "Big Empty." Weiland looked to be in fine form with his dancing and posing while his singing was also right-on-the-money.
He looked like he was having a good time as he found moments to improvise and break into Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" at the end of "Creep" and a brief rendition of The Doors' "Five to One." The band played a variety of hits from all of their albums and the crowd appeared to leave satisfied, even if the set was cut short by 45 minutes (makes you wonder how much more they would have jammed or extended songs).
The Bad: Waiting. STP was scheduled to hit the stage at 8:45, but the lights didn't go out until 9:35. In the meantime, three songs were cut from the setlist (both setlists are listed at the end of the review). Why? Your guess is as good as mine, but all fingers seem to point towards Weiland who has been notoriously late on this tour. Aside from the delay, the only other complaint was Weiland's ramblings. He was usually incoherent between songs, if he offered more than a deep, slow "Thank You."
The Verdict: A great show, and you hope that if Weiland is having troubles again that he gets help. He's got a great voice and stage presence, but you worry for his health and well-being.
