The Houstons The laid-back harmonies of brothers Matt and Justin Faircloth (nee Houston) always seem to be comprised of equal parts resignation and rejoicing, and the mid-tempo shuffle of the songs works perfectly whether one's settling in for the evening or preparing to take the town by storm. Sonically, it's also dead-on Houston – or anywhere where there's plenty of room to roam. Ostensibly a mix of steel, hazy pedal-driven guitar and brushed drums, it's driving music – in either interpretation of the word. With the Trouble Walkers and Bruce Hazel and Some Volunteers. The Milestone (Timothy C. Davis)

Blue Dogs The Blue Dogs isn't going to blow you away with its musicianship, necessarily, but the band does manage to rollick along rather pleasantly, knowing that mid-tempo doesn't have to mean Hootie. Bobby Houck and co. do a nice job of consistently evoking the Carolina landscape without resorting to faux country tropes, and the whole thing really swings after a couple cold ones: rhythm and brews, if you will. Sylvia Theater, York (Davis)

CIAA — It's time to party!

Posted By on Thu, Feb 26, 2009 at 3:35 PM

CIAA technically stands for Center Intercollegiate Athletic Association, but it can also mean Charlotte Is having A lot of After Parties! And I do mean A LOT of parties...

This year's multitude of CIAA parties popped off at Pop Life at Apostrophe Lounge ... and The Bee Man Candles Co.

Apparently, in these hard economic times people aren’t buying enough candles to keep the Bee Man in the honey money, and so now Apostrophe Lounge has expanded (just for CIAA) ... and just in time. Because even with Apostrophe doubled in size, there was a line out the door(s). It was like two totally detached lounges with two separate entrances, yet the same venue divided by a mere apostrophe... or wall rather (which, sadly, could not be knocked down).

And there's a lot more going on there and all around town.

Concert announcement

Posted By on Thu, Feb 26, 2009 at 12:12 PM

Def Leppard will stop by the Queen City on Aug. 8 with Poison and Cheap Trick. While the venue has not been announced, I'd say it's a safe bet it's going to be Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre.

Tickets will go on sale on March 6.

The Smokers S.C. rockers have been turning heads with a mishmash of dirty blues, '60s garage rock and sloppy punk since their arrival on the scene last year. Cranked to the max, this is drinking music that also, um, smokes. On a good night, it's all about rocking out with battered guitars and even more battered brain cells. With Appalucia and Sioux City Pete and the Beggars. The Milestone (Samir Shukla)

T.I. Every time his name is mentioned, it's usually followed by "who is going to jail in two weeks." I've been hearing that for what seems like an eternity, but the fact he's on tour shows his date behind bars is at least not happening this week. He was sentenced to one year on weapons charges – scheduled to start in March – so you should probably see him now, because the next chance you get will be a while. Bojangles Coliseum (Jeff Hahne)

A hint of Tinted Windows

Posted By on Wed, Feb 25, 2009 at 4:17 PM

Curious about that new "supergroup" called Tinted Windows? The band consists of former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, Cheap Trick drummer Bun E Carlos, Taylor Hanson of Hanson and bassist Adam Schlesinger of Fountains Of Wayne.

The band's debut album is due in April, and I'd say the music leans a little more toward the Hanson side of the road than to the Pumpkins, but check out the video below to see what you think...

More on Bonnaroo

Posted By on Wed, Feb 25, 2009 at 3:12 PM

It was announced today that Phish will be performing a late-night set on Friday night at Bonnaroo and perform a second set on Sunday to close out the festival.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be one of the headliners on Saturday night.

The rumor mill had pretty much confirmed that Phish would play a late-night set and a headlining set, but most people thought Springsteen would close out the festival.

I'm guessing a lot of people will stick around and try to get Monday off to catch one of the reunion shows of jam-favorite Phish.

The Common Market after dark...

Posted By on Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 4:12 PM

When my friend told me she wanted to go to the Common Market for a girls night out I asked her if she was on crack.

“You’ve never been?” she asked.

“Yeah, in the afternoon to get lunch or stock up on my hippie snacks,” associating the Common Market with a cool convenience store-slash-deli... but as it turns out, it’s also a -slash bar — CM After Dark, if you will.

I walked into the Common Market at 10 p.m. on a weekend night to a DJ playing Boys II Men, a bartender serving wine, a cooler reading, “cold and cheap beer” and an entire cooler of Sparks (which excited me by the way).

Meanwhile, you can go and select your own beer out of the cooler from $2 Tecate to the rarest of imports, pay the cashier and sit down at the bar — Swig and drink it. It’s like the Willy Wonka Hop Factory — there’s even chocolate beer...

Britney Spears controversy over new song

Posted By on Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 3:52 PM

OK, this is ridiculous. There's a controversy over the new Britney Spears single, "If You Seek Amy." Some fans are saying that it's a big bunch of nothing, but...seriously? It's obvious that the message is clear.

Let me also point out that the nasally-voiced Spears sounds horrific in the song.

The controversy around the sound is that if you listen, it sounds not like "If you Seek Amy" but like "F-U-C-K Me."

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

And when you look at how the lyrics are written:

All of the boys and all of the girls are begging to (F-U-C-K ME)

and

Oh baby baby (F-U-C-K ME) tonight

Oh baby baby We'll do whatever you like
